I chatted to him at Healdsburg 2003 and played 2 of his guitars, both were among the very best sounding at the show. Really nice humble man. I was very tempted by one of his guitars, deep rich tone, lovely Braz... sad to hear of his passing

I had Michael build my first commissioned guitar back in 1995, back when I lived in his neighborhood. I had taken my old Yamaha FG-335 in to him for a new nut and a fret job, and he let me play his personal guitar… a gorgeous flamed maple SJ. I ended up ordering one similar, with flamed maple and a beautiful European spruce top. I play it to this day, and love it like a child:-)

Sorry to hear of his passing. I recall reading on this forum once he posted (if I recall rightly) telling of how Olson had got the idea to use cedar from him or something like that. Not sure if i remembered it correctly. Whatever the case, he was a luthier who had begun building from way back in the 1970s so it is the passing of an age also. Here is an interview with him that may be a fitting epitaph for his work as a luthier...

Default Michael Keller

I live a few miles from Michael’s shop. I remember visiting with him for hours on end surrounded by his beautiful works in process. Eventually I commissioned a Koa Jumbo with one of the last remaining ‘Lucky Strike’ redwood tops. A truly magnificent guitar.

I recently acquired a scintillating war era Martin D-28 and when I reached out to Michael to tell him that his Jumbo Koa is every bit as remarkableÂ… I learned that he had passed. I am very sorry that this Master Builder is no longer with us.

I intend to seek out one of his smaller guitars. Wonderful instruments.

As I recall, there was no such thing as a “quick visit” with Mike:-) The man loved to talk guitars… I’m still trying to figure out how he found the time to build anything!

Bought this used years ago. 1/2 size Baby guitar that is standard tuning. I have never seen 1/2 size guitars with this quality anywhere else but with Keller. The Koa is pretty crazy. Last pic with me shows the size in my lap.

Old thread I know but...Just learned Michael passed away. Very, very sad. He was a good friend (I live in Rochester) and like others have said, there was no quick stop at Michael's shop. We'd sit and talk (well Michael did most of the talking) for hours. I learned so much from him. Last time I saw him, he was in tears as he told me his horrible experience with his neuropathy and Mayo clinic's treatment experience. We lost a wonderful human being when he passed.
