First off, my guitars are all set up with low action and not a lot of neck relief, so whether a dread, jumbo or small body, they play easily all over the necks.

Next, my "tone mood" steers me to a particular guitar for finger style pieces:

Classical mood, my Cervantes Signature nylon

Piercing clarity and punch, my Collings OM1A TRADITIONAL

Warm, dark sweetness, lots of overtones my Martin OM-42

The are probably my three favorites for finger style of the whole herd. Yet I play finger style on my dreads and jumbos and even the 12-string too.

My Collings OMs (an OM2GSS and an OM1A) are remarkable at combining warmth and clarity in fingerstyle. I most often--not always--prefer the slightly warmer OM2.

My Jose Ramirez classical is my personal first choice. Classical guitars have so much more personality. But my Larrivée LSV-11 is a very close second.

Walnut Taylor 12 fret with a maple neck. Very easy to play and extremely responsive.

Redwood/ziricote deep concert by KR guitars. Very balanced sounding with the Elixir HD strings and fanned frets.

KR OM. Very nice modern sound. Handles percussive playing very well. Currently tuned to DADGAD.

Bob Thompson oversized OM with torrified Englemann top and Brazilian back/sides. Perfect vintage fingerstyle tone.

My fav style is the 000-28 for finger-style, 12 fret or 14 fret.

IMHO nothing beats a Classical guitar for fingerstyle.

Good thread. I’ll be looking to acquire a basic model classical guitar - it’s been a long time/ too long without one.

My guitars are generally smaller bodied - the largest body guitars I have are a spruce top Martin dreadnought junior and my Epiphone Olympic masterbilt reissue. Both due sound good with fingerstyle - not muddy like a dread would sound for me when I fingerpick. I also have 2 parlor guitars, an Art & Lutherie Wild Cherry AMI and a Kala parlor guitar, and they excel at fingerstyle playing. Just go with what your ears tell you, and not the size.

Default OM-28V

Wide string spacing. A well balanced voice across the spectrum from bass to treble. Incredible projection for any size guitar, especially for a small body.

Default finger picking

I do very little finger picking; that being said the only 6 string acoustic I have is a Martin 00028 EC. To me it sounds good finger picking, flat picking or strumming. It turned out to be a surprisingly versatile guitar.

I do occasionally try to finger pick my 12 string Taylor 455 CE.
