I am the Walrus - The Beatles, fingerstyle; steel Vs nylon
I've recorded two versions of this in the last couple of weeks. One is on steel string, the video was recorded outdoors to suit some of the lyrics to the song. It's a bit weird, but I enjoy the whole process of making these videos.
The other is on my classical, and is a single shot video, as simple as it can get. Just wonder which you prefer.. Thanks for watching. |

both good versions but the classical I seem to like better.
By the way who are The Beatles? |

Thanks a lot Slooky. Maybe I should record more on the classical.
Maybe I dreamed the Beatles, have I woke in a different dimension. ? (This sounds familiar. ;-). ) |

Great rendition of a great song. I'm a steel string guy and I feel that version captured both the spunk AND elegance of the song. Quite an accomplishment to capture both the personality and complexity of this classic...very inspired playing!

That's brilliant. :-)
Thanks very much cedartop, I get what you're saying about the steel version capturing the essence of the tune. |

Nice job. I like the nylon sound with this tune.

Thanks a lot, it seems opinions are roughly equal here. Wonder how it'll play out on YouTube, at the moment the nylon is in the lead... :-)
It is interesting how and why some people think certain tunes sound better on one rather than on the other. There is more difference in timbre (??) that can be obtained with the nylon I think, but the steel string, as well as having a very different sound, generally has more sustain. But maybe that has more to do with the guitars themselves. I certainly prefer the sound of steel with older renaissance and Early Music. I really appreciate all your comments, it helps to make the whole process worthwhile. I might do another steel vs nylon on another tune coming up in the next few weeks. If I had more space to leave the microphones, USB interface etc set up, I'd probably do more, but i don't (have the space) and its just so time consuming, to put up, take down again, and then do the editing. I envy those of you who have setups installed in spare rooms. Maybe one day... |

BLOWN AWAY! Absolutely fantastic! Quite a challenge you took on learning this with all the changes. Very impressed.
Hmmm??? I like them both. Probably the classical is easier for you to hit harder on? so you are getting a little more dynamics with the Nylon. Normally I would say steel string gives more dynamics. But steel string does require more pressure and it might have been easier for you to express yourself on the nylon. However, did love the harmonics on the steel string when you strummed. Its a toss up.Did you Use SM-81 on both recordings? Did you use just one SM-81 or two? |

I'm very impressed you identified the SM81! You clearly know your microphones.
Thanks a lot for saying you were blown away, it's made me smile. The nylon version was recorded with just the SM81, the steel version was recorded in stereo with the SM81 and an AKG c3000b , a large diaphragm condenser. Sound recorded via Reaper. |
