Default LDC on a Speaker Cab

I'm new into the world of playing live with an electric. I have in the past a small amount but I used a Tech 21 Sansamp DI instead of a regular amplifier and ran it into my mixer. I want to mic my amplifier to run into my mixer. One of the mics I have free to use is an Audio Technica AT3035. Wondering if I could actually hang it like a Sennheiser E609. I also have a spare Shure SM57 but don't have or want to drag another mic stand along. Doing a little research before I dive in! Any thoughts?

Almost all LDCs are extremely sensitive to movement and transferring vibration to the mic element. That's why you rarely see them without the shock mount. I personally would avoid it. Some LDCs are rated for high decibel levels, but I also wouldn't subject any LDC I cared about to the abuse of hanging it in front of a guitar cabinet.

Even though a 57 or 58 has a polar pattern that is generally used with the sound source oriented to the front of the mic in your case the volume from hanging the mic in front of the baffle mounted drivers is sufficient to side address the mic without needing to use a stand mount. I've done it for live PA work before and it worked fine.

An LDC requires phantom power - not all mixers provide this. The SM57 (or 58) is going to be the best option.

The old 57 hanging works perfect for my needs. Thank you for the help!
