J45 strings
I just got my Gibson J-45 a couple weeks ago and I am in love so far. I’m getting ready to start experimenting with some different strings and I’m thinking of going with a medium gauge. Just thought I’d get some input from the seasoned guitar players on experience with mediums. Also my playing usually revolves around mostly rhythm strumming and palm muting with occasional fingerpicking. Thoughts?

My favorites are John Pearse Phosphor Bronze 12-53.
The 12's sounded better on mine than the 13's. Easier to play too. |

I also like the John Pearse Phosphor Bronze...but I like lights on mine.
I figure if the J45 came with lights, I'll just keep it that way. But def try the John Pearse strings out. They're my favorite so far.

I tried a boat load of strings on my 45 and really loved Martin Retro lights. Happily played them for a long time...then I discovered Santa Cruz Mid Tension strings. Bingo! Play like lights but move the top like mediums. Noticeable increase in volume and single notes go off like a rifle shot. They’re my new favorites. But you can’t go wrong with the Retros either.

Asnell, I used John Pearse medium gauge phosphor bronze strings on mine. They sounded great on the guitar.
As for whether lights or mediums will sound best on the instrument, it really comes down to both your playing style and the guitar itself. Being essentially a rhythm guitarist, I prefer the tone and power that mediums give me; those are what I generally start with. However, not all guitars sound their best with mediums. By the same token, some guitars lack something when strung with lights. So by all means experiment with string gauges as well as different alloys when trying to get this guitar dialed in. Hope this helps. Wade Hampton Miller |

I've tried quite a few strings on mine, but I play finger style with a lot of palm muting going on when I play it. My favorite strings for it are the SC low tensions. If you don't like spending that much on one set the Martin Flexible Cores are good too.
Truth is even the 80/20 Gibson's sound good on it. Probably the only strings I wouldn't put on a J-45 are silk and steel

I've been using DR Rare strings on my Mahogany back guitars, and my new slope dread sounds great with them. Great volume, sustain, and tone. I may try a set of Martin Monel to see how they compare (didn't care for them on my Rosewood guitars).

So some news. I ended up trying out the elixir medium PB’s loved the power and volume but I’ve never been a huge fan of elixirs super bright tone. So I just put the trusty old martin SP lights on and it sounds amazing. I think I’ll try some John Pearse mediums after these go bad. Overall love the power I get from mediums but as of now enjoy the variety I get with lights. Thank y’all for the input!
