Default Tom Sands Texas Model S

Kathy and I have the great pleasure of hosting another guitar party March 2020. One of the best things about this is meeting new luthiers and seeing what magic they can build. To that end, we will start to see build threads pop up showing what guitars are being made for B.I.G. (er) 2020!!!

Bruce Sexauer has a current build right now starting on page 9 of this thread: https://www.acousticguitarforum.com/...=552812&page=9 showing a guitar being built for the event. This one is special as it is his first build with his new cardiac blood flow and valve replacement!!!

A new luthier for us coming this year is the wonderful Tom Sands. I have never heard nor read a single bad word about him or any of this instruments. Will McNichol will be playing his Sands guitar for the Saturday evening concert.

Tom has begun his Texas Model S build for the event and I could not be happier. The woods are beautiful as I hope you will see below.

First the specs:

Model S - Scale Length: 24.75”
Cutaway
Top: Torrified Red Spruce
Back and sides: Madagascar Rosewood
Rosette: Green Patinated Copper
Bindings: Madagascar Rosewood
Neck: One-piece Honduran Mahogany
Headplate: Madagascar Rosewood
Fretboard: Madagascar Rosewood
Bridge: Madagascar Rosewood
End graft: Green Patinated Copper
Position markers and side dots: Green Patinated Copper
Fretwire: Evo Gold Medium with Ball Ends
Tuners: Robson

Pictures to follow! Stay tuned and feel free to comment. Tom is now a sponsor of the AGF and will likely be checking in. If anyone is interested in playing this very guitar, just send me a message.

Hey, Tom, I've been away awhile, but jumping back into the Forum. This thread just jumped out at me.
Do I understand correctly that Tom is building this guitar for you? Or is it a spec guitar for the B.I.G. show?

Holy moly, man, that MadRose is out of this world! That's Dalbergia baronii, right? There was a short-lived supply of that wood, with the spectacular landscape figure, black-ink lines, absolutely stunning and out of this world, back in the early 2000s... But it sure didn't last long.
I have one set left of this type of MadRose that's almost as MAD as this one. I don't think we'll ever see any more of this Universe-class wood coming out of Madagascar in our lifetimes.
I'm going to follow this build to the end- er, the beginning. Can't wait to see how it develops.

Raucous applause!

Cool to see this BIG(er) build thread starting up here--it won't be long now!

I've been following Tom's progress on this build on IG and FB--it's gonna be a beauty!

Good to see you posting again, Steve--will miss seeing you and your beautiful guitars in March...

Nemo, I'll be there in spirit, and look forward to tracking along as a spectator. Hopefully I'll get my act together enough to come to the 2021 B.I.G.
Any fence-sitters out there, don't hesitate- it will be the highlight of your year, guaranteed!

Thank you Dennis, and play it you shall! It will be fun for you to A/B it with that other guy, oh what's his name....oh yeah Kostal since they both apprenticed at the same little shop somewhere in California.

Doing a little binding and purfling work, man what an amazing set of woods.

That is indeed a fine, fine, fine looking set of madagascar rosewood, the likes of which are simply not available anymore. if the guitar sounds a snice as it looks already, it will be a plenty good guitar.
