Default A.J.Lucas Pavilion Sweep, spruce and bog oak.

I procured a set of 3,500 year-old bog oak for this guitar. The wood has been in the ground in southern England perfectly preserved by the lack of oxygen. It is black/brown with the oak figure visible and is somewhat harder than regular oak. The soundboard is European spruce and the neck reclaimed Honduras mahogany salvaged from a door frame from Bradford University. The fingerboard and head veneer are also bog oak and the bridge is walnut with a black stain. I used walnut to keep the weight down. The sides are laminated with an inner skin of regular English oak, the total thickness being 3.5mm. This rigidity gives the soundboard and back a solid perimeter and keeps the energy in the soundboard from dissipating into the sides. I generally use a zero fret and a wooden nut. In this case the nut is holly which has a nice tight even grain structure.

I've just returned from showing this guitar at The Holy Grail Guitar Show in Berlin. It was very well received.

Wow, what a great looking guitar! I've often wondered about bog oak for back-and-sides. Such a great color and history to it. How would you describe its tone?

It's hard to really describe sound but there's a real depth to the tone alongside a sparkling top end. I hope the video footage from the Holy Grail Show will convey the subtleties of the sound.

As always, fantastic work, Adrian.
What timber did you use for the bindings? It's a fine look.

That bog oak is really crazy unique looking and I love the figuring. And 3500 years old?? Beautiful guitar.

So that's what a Holly nut looks like!

Thanks JR.

I was looking out for you in Berlin this year. Shame you didn't make it.

Looks lovely. But it could do with a fan fret ;-)
