Some people you just don't figure will make it to 83. Go figure.

Keith Richards has made it to 79 so far. Gotta be the genes.

Back in 1968 and 1969 I lived down the street from Sonny Barger's mother. I asked a neighbor one day why there were so many motorcycles around that house all the time, and I was told it was his mother's house. At the time I didn't know who he was but learned soon enough.

Yep,
I followed his exploits a little, read his alleged autobiography. Sorry, but 'RIP' is not the first thing I thought of. Ymmv. |

Idem.
But RIP can also stand for more appropriate thoughts

Interesting exploits to be sure. Nice guy? Hell no.

Agreed, but his autobiography was a very entertaining read and probably the blueprint for "Sons of Anarchy".

I recall a quote attributed to Mark Twain - “I’ve never wished anyones demise, but I’ve read a few obituaries with satisfaction “

Growing up in California in the 1960s, I remember seeing a lot of press about the Hell's Angels and Sonny Barger. They were always in some kind of trouble and lived by their own rules. Heaven help anyone who got in their way.
However, the weird thing was that it always seemed as if the "normal working stiffs" secretly admired them for living outside the confines of the societal rules they found themselves boxed into. In a sense, it seemed a paradox that "normal" folks both feared and admired people such as Sonny Barger. What a wacky world we live in. Tony

Chronic felonious behaviors aside, a million high-earning professionals on $40-100+k choppers and baggers can certainly identify with (the high-tech, sanitized, gentlemanly incarnation of) that make-your own rules/code of "honor" appeal.

Hunter S Thompson’s book was a good read. Lost any admiration for them after that.
