Default Classical guitar $300 -500, used

You may be tired of these kind of posts. But, I need to find a pretty good used classical, old is okay, too, I have no idea of what guitars to look for as there are many different brands and models. But what would you look for in the used categories of Reverb or Ebay, that would be a pretty good guitar?

I picked up a Amalio Burguet Vanessa, a hand built from Spain, for a little over $500. There are deals to be had. I had been looking at Cordobas, but stumbled across this gem.

I have owned a half a dozen Japanese made guitars from the 1960s and 70s. Everyone was well made and serviceable with very little attention. They are readily available on the local used market like Craig's list. I found one covered with with dust but otherwise as new in a pawn shop. They took my offer of $40.

Now, I have some fine ones with Brazilian rosewood. They are more sensitive and needed some restoration.

Brand names for these Japanese guitars matter little; they were imported and sold under various names. If this worries you most any bearing the name Yamaha or Cort can be trusted if they look undamaged. Sturdy but maybe not very loud. Not loud is good if you have a beginner in the house. Loud guitars are more delicate. - Stevo

Pawn shops can be a great hiding place for well made classical guitars at discount prices. It seems as if some peeps buy 1 one to "try" classical only to find the wider fretboard, difference in action and tone not for them. or they buy 1 for a child thinking they are buying a youth or student steel string acoustic and the love doesn't set in. there are tons of excellent makers/builders out there, both private and mass merchandisers. I have always had a soft spot and love for Canadian or spanish made classicals. The sound created by nylon or silk is an addiction and one of mine always makes it into my hands when i haul out my gits to play. the warmth of them is almost an ethereal experience for me. good luck

Go to Reverb under the seller's shop called "Vintage Japanese Guitars."
I purchased nice vintage Yamaha solid spruce top from early 1970's at your budget price recently.

Please excuse the extremely long URL below...

But this store near Washington DC is selling a nice Cordoba (I believe brand new) for $400... This is a very reputable store.. I purchased my Burguet 2M from them way back in 96... The luthier who works on my guitars recommends them, and he is a certified Martin and Gibson repair luthier.

I bought my Cordoba C10 Parlor based on Bradfords review of it

Good luck... interested on what you decide to get

Used? You have lots of choices.
  • Yamaha (made in Japan, then Taiwan, then China)
  • Cordoba (made in Spain, then China)
  • Kenny Hill Estudio or New World series (China)
  • Kremona (Bulgaria)
  • Prudencio Saez (Spain)
  • Alhambra (Spain)
  • Takamine C series (still Japan I think)
  • Godin nylon series (Canada)

The weird thing is that I still haven't come across any Alvarez-Yairi's over the past 15 years. That's why I don't find myself in a position to recommend them.

They've got to be around Northern California.

We're roughly in the same neck of the woods. Who sells them?

Yamaha is the answer. They're pretty popular for students around here for years, so there're usually a lot available used in shops.

Just yesterday I bought a 1973 classical guitar made in Japan for $199 with free shipping included. The guitar has a cedar top, rosewood back and sides, big 664 scale prevalent in the 1960's and 70's. The brand is HERNANDES and the model is their "1a," and part of their lineup that included grades 3, 2, 1, 1a and Concert models--in ascending order of quality and price, all a copy of Ramirez guitars.
Here is a Youtube video sound sample of Hernandis Grade 3 lowest level model being played by a good musician...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QtCYH_KRAJ8
