I'd say they're certainly less consistent, especially compared to Taylor. And I've seen quite a few brand new, high-end Gibsons with finish flaws that never would have made it out the door at Taylor or Martin.

BTW, as an aside, I love my D18. It was however, not cosmetically flawless when I bought it new. I bought it anyway because it sounded and played so well. I didn’t post anything negative on the forum or make an issue out of Martin’s QC, didn’t feel compelled to. My Eastman is a 9.5 out of ten build-wise. It matches up more than favorably to any of my other three.

I'm not sure Ive ever played a J45, but I have owned an LG2 for over 15 years and really love that guitar, actually an unnatural fondness for an inanimate object. Now I have a new Waterloo WL-14, that shares many of the same qualities in my mind. Trying to compare a new Waterloo to a 73 year old Gibson is a bit of a stretch though. I'll check back with you in a couple decades as it it opens up.

Yep. The J-15, J-35, J-45, J200, Country Western, Hummingbird....... all great Gibson tone. No substitution is necessary.

Agreed! But I would add the Gibson Songwriter to the list.

Are there any other guitars that have the Gibson tone?
The Beatles like Epiphones.

Yes but you may be dismayed to learn John’s was a plywood guitar.
George had one too. Then again, you may not care. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gibson_J-160E

Price wasn't mentioned, so assuming it's no object, why not just get a Gibson? Even a vintage one.
If the OP is looking for something BUDGET, I would think the closest you could get the "Gibson vibe" would be Epiphone, no? I'd love a J-45 (new one; I couldn't afford vintage), but the Epi comes pretty close

Gibson tones (plural...)
I felt I had to chime in...which Gibson tone?
Three Gibby's here, all heavenly and unique sounding... First, theres the J45... Then the Advanced Jumbo.... Then the Dove... Having had many Martins, Taylors, Guilds , and others, I still find the Gibbys to have the nicest character and tone available. The three I have are all different, unique, and beautiful. YES, I am totally spoiled! Track one (or three!) down that sings to you, and it will be as good as it gets. YES a blatant recommendation, and yes, just an opinion, of course... |

Eastman is making some mighty fine guitars. Their sloped dreads compare excellently to Gibson's J45. Prices are amazing too.

It does not “sound” like a J45 though.

Hmmmmmm.....
Don't know if this was already discussed...the year, size, build specs, and condition makes a wide range of good 'ol Gibson thump. Example...a 1936 tuxedo L-00 will sound far superior to my 2009 BluesKing! The iconic sound of Gibson acoustics has changed thru the decades...but nothing, IMO, touches the Kalamazoo builds from the 1930's.
