I don't know When The Man Comes Around, but both A Boy Named Sue and One Piece At A Time were Shel Silverstein songs. Shel never got as much credit as he deserved for many of the songs he wrote.
He also wrote Cover Of The Rolling Stone and Dr. Hook's cover of this got them on the cover of the Rolling Stone, but Shel never made the cover.
Most folks think that The Unicorn Song is an Irish trad song, but it was written by a Jewish guy from Chicago.

************************************************** *************

There are many talkin' Blues songs, most of which use the same unique chord progression originated by Chris Bouchillon for his Original Talking Blues. When I was a kid, there was a talkin' Blues called The All American Boy by Bobby Bare uder the name Bill Parsons

Now, gather round cats and I'll tell you a story
'Bout how to become the all American boy.
Get yourself a guitar and put it in tune
And you'll be rockin' and a rollin' soon
Impressin' the girls
Pickin' hot licks
And all that jazz. . .

Another that I enjoy playing is Life Gets Teejus, Don't It. Doc Watson does a good version.

I like to do Tom Dundee's Dog as well.

DOG Tom Dundee

Well the whole thing started 'cause it looked like fun
When other people had a dog; "I'm gonna get me one,"
I said, "Have a little friend around the place."
So I went to the pet store down the street
And lyin' in the middle of a canine heap
Was a sleepy little puppy with a quiet sort of a face.

The next few weeks were certainly strange
Between the barkin' and the thinkin' up of names
Old Blue he wasn't and Spot just didn't apply
So I settled for Harry, just because
That's how he is and that's how he was
And that's how the house gets more and more as days go by.

For a time I was careful where I sat and
The rug got funky and he chewed up my hat
And it still happens once in a while when he gets mad
But it's been pretty even after all
I taught him what I know about playin' ball
And he's helped me get rid of some stuff I used to have.

Sometimes friends drop by for a couple of beers
And we all sit around, take turns rubbin' his ears
And callin' him; it's been that way ever since he was a pup.
He sleeps on the bed and when I turn over,
He turns over, then I turn over,
Then he turns over, then I turn over, then we get up.

As my life keeps movin' through the different conditions
Seems the big changes come with the smallest decisions
You're in for a surprise when you think you got it figured, I've found.
'Cause who ever thought I'd dote on a pet,
But lookin' back now, I almost forget
How I filled up the time before my dog was around.

His own album, "Inside Folks Songs" is rudimentary and brilliant. Very fun and very dark at the same time.

Here's one of my more contemporary faves. Fifteen verses. It goes on for days.

If he's just talking, why'd he need to capo up two frets? (kidding)

Perhaps he didn't "need to", but just wanted to.
Doc Watson said that he preferred to play with a capo on the second fret.

Todd Snider talks before during and after songs...sometimes for 13 minutes. YouTube ‘tales from moondawg’s tavern’ for hours of his banter. Good road trip escape.

This one always gets a good reaction

Yeah. Guy Clark. Several great ones. Bring a hanky for Randall Knife.

Lewis Grizzard entitled one of his books "My Daddy Was a Pistol, and I'm a Son of a Gun." It wasn't as funny as most of his books. He wrote a lot about men drinking beer and cryin' about their Dads.

I think it is a serious talent to talk one's way through a song like this. Not something I can do.

Totally understand that idea. I have been doing a "spoken word" version of Dirk Powell's Waterbound, (as done here... https://youtu.be/1MAMu3LHIYA ) but not as a performance piece. It's such a powerful song that speaking over it makes it even more poignant.
