Default Shades of Indigo - new original

Shades of Indigo

He come from Jericho out on the plain
Expecting nothing much of anything
Not such for reason or appeal
An aimless cog inside a wheel of mangled steel

She worked the counter for a dollar chain
In shades of indigo every day the same
Her daddy barely knew her name
Trapped and entangled in a never ending maze

An abstract actor in a small town play
An aging ingenue in worn chambray
The curtain rises on the stage
The scene is set to cast the players straightaway

Lifelong disappointment, left bitter and unhealed
No secret wish that ever come true

Inside an empty heart where no hurt hides concealed
No silver lining there to cling to

A chance encounter in no special place
A random fall into a state of grace
A dance in stark black silhouette
Forgives a lifetime of rejection and regret

In dawn's fair afterglow the past is done
In words spoke easily a new day begun
History's unabating loneliness
Distant memories of a numbing callousness

With no uncertain clarity the future is revealed
A promise made that gently binds you

In time the spark takes hold and now a light burns in the soul
The cherished hope that comes to find you

Thank you Rick. As has become my madness and obsession, I've spent several hours and countless "takes" further developing this song to a point that I can marginally begin to tolerate it. I've updated the OP to reflect the current version, but have little expectation that it will remain as is.
