Interesting thread, i did a little experiment also last night with my vocalist.

Ive had for a couple years an SM58 for vocals and last week bought an SM 57beta for amplifying a guitar, recording and backup vocals.

My vocalist partner also tried both mikes for lead vocals. Originally he liked the SM57beta more because yes, it seem much clearer.

But to be honest when i listened back the clarity was actually too much with the SM57beta, thats probably why its so good for miking guitars and instruments.

In the end I found the SM58 to be much more balanced, fuller and simply more suitable for lead vocals, while the SM57beta works very well for instument amplification - which I guess is how they were designed for in the first place ..

I wouldn't want a thin sounding mic on my guitar amp.

Would love to hear someone else do a side by side with an SM 58 and a Senn 835.

The EV 767 is similar to the Beta 58a in quality but I think it has a better low end

The SM57beta is not a 'thin' sounding mike, it is a 'clear' sounding mike. When i played my CW through it it actually gave it more warmth (its quite a bright, woody guitar) but also maintained strong note clarity.

Playing the CW through an SM58 just made it sound bassy but muffled.

"I" didn't say it was a thin sounding mic.

My observations with the Electro-Voice N/D 767a mic in comparison to these Shure mics can be found at this thread: http://www.acousticguitarforum.com/f...d.php?t=198559
