Default Which Eastman - 00 or "parlour"?

I can't afford is right now - Dentistry, specs, house maintenance, but I've got an itch - I mean GAS.

I've got a perfecctly good Collings 0002h stand scale and light guage strings,
and a Waterloo WL-12 (short scale but narrow 1 & 3/4" nut width) and I do have a British built 0028.

I had thought of buying a Collings 002h, but they are far to expensive to consider now.

I'd even consider a reasonably priced Martin 0028VS, but I'm thinking about an Eastman E20-00 or an E20-p

Assuming my savings and such aren't completely devastated by matters outside my control, (political - leave that alone) which would you go for for a nice little lounge finger-picker?

Gotta be a 12 fret, 1 & 13/16" nut width, slothead, short scale and rosewood B&S.

E20-00 - body 14 & 3/8" x 4"

E20-p - body - 13 & 3/4 x 4 1/8".

Anybody got "hands on" experience of either ? both ?

Thoughts ?

Thumbs up

I played the E20-00 and was surprised at how heavy it felt. I liked the E10-00 a tad better...YMMV

I have both, sort of.
Eastman E20-P (slot head, 12 frets)
Eastman E20-OM (a little larger than parlor size but not a slot head or 12 frets)

Both rosewoods with same wide nut.
E20-P strings are 1/16 wider at the saddle, not so good for flat picking.

The E20-P is not a handicapped parlor, but feels and sounds like a full size, with a high tonal quality, but not like the OM, which almost rivals my D-35.

For comparison, my Yamaha CFS3M solid, with a "compact folk" body, cannot compare to the Eastman E20-P Parlor. It has a narrow nut, 14 frets, and a very small body. It has a quality sound, but not a full size sound like the Eastman E20-P. The CSF3M feels tiny, cramped and funky when played in rotation with the D-35, the E20-OM and E20P.

So I am keeping the Eastman E20-P as a great Parlor, for the lounge, sofa and Youtube computer chair, and selling the Yamaha CSF3M "compact folk" as something less compatible with the larger guitars.

But to answer your question, an Eastman E20-P Parlor does not compare to my E-20-OM, and so probably not to an Eastman E20-00. But if you don't have a Parlor, the E-20P is a fine choice. I recently bought a Larrivee parlor and immediately resold it to buy the Eastman parlor.

I don’t play well but I love my OO. Seems like what you would get in the extra tone, volume, strumming capability over the parlor would be worth it. Still a very comfortable small guitar.

I have an E20-00. Perhaps the best small body (00,0,P) guitar I have owned (that includes Blueridge BR 371 & 341, Eastman E20P & E10P & E15ss, Martin 00-18v and a slew of lesser ones). The E20P just didn't seem balanced to my ear. Too heavy on the bass. I sold it and bought the E10P instead.

The E20-00 has all the virtues I had been looking for in an 00/0 guitar. Decent bass but balanced. Comfort - oh yeah! Great sustain. Mine seems to be pretty well made with only a minor cosmetic flaw - common with Eastman in my experience. Tuners are not the best. It needs a minor adjustment every time I pick it up.

Sorry about your financial woes. A new truck and old age has put a damper on my GAS.

Personally, I would hold out for the Martin 0028vs

Whatever you do, I'd look at OM's seriously before I got a 00 of any kind. I had a custom Martin 0028vs made for me and I ended up giving it to my son. I have owned a lot of guitars in my life and a lot of different body shapes, and I have come back to the OM as the ideal and most versatile body shape. I prefer them in rosewood with 1 3/4 inch nuts. I don't know if Eastman makes one, but if they do, it will be probably be pretty good, IMHO.

There's a review of the E1P-LTD and the E1OO-LTD at Guitar.com.

This comparison of sapele-bodied Eastmans that have all the same specs as the rosewood-bodied guitars that you're looking at - might steer you in which direction you want to go regarding body size.

I agree with you that the OM is the most versatile guitar body shape around, but an OM wasn't on his list of possible choices.

Beaky bird, I had an E1p-ltd for a week or so, really nice sounding guitar, but despite the website info, it had a rhythm size neck ...on a parlour(?!)

Malcolm, I understand what you mean by OMs - but that would not meet my criteria for a 12 fret wider fretboard.

but thanks both for your input.

Hi Andy, I was only agreeing with a previous poster about the versatility of the OM, in my other post I encourage you to hold out for the Martin 0028VS. I think you and I have similar taste in guitars, and I like the 0028VS a lot.

Silly Moustache , I know this is a silly thing to say - But
any way to hold this off and buy what you really want ?
Eastmans are not bad , but your a great guitarist and would the eastman really
be a keeper ?
Ive been their , seems like a temporary guitar and your more of a
pro quality keeper kind of guy !
(Hope i didnt over step myself )

From my own experience , It's better off waiting and keeping what i have until
a great quality guitar comes my way -Id be very happy with
