Default 1959 Gibson ES-175 ser.# question

I am SERIOUSLY eyeing/ in the process of buying a Gibson ES-175 w/single PAF humbucker which the seller states as being made in 1959. The PAF pickup looks right as does the finish[ looks properly checked , weathered and entirely original] and other key ID-ing aspects, and the serial number on the inside on the label is #30735, which is correct for 1959. And that's the genesis of my question because stamped in ink inside the lower 'F'-hole bout under the aforementioned ser. # is #S 9985 5. Is this second number an assembly number ? Help !!!

It's most likely a lot number. On earlier L-50's it was often the only number you'd find.

Gibson has had a knack for screwing around with thier numbers from time to time. A call to Gibson may help. They are very knowledgeable and friendly where that sort of thing is an issue.
