I made a custom butt graft for this one - with ebony and copper.

Oh and this was before giving the copper a patina. There will be copper pieces on the back and headstock to match this one and the piece in the rosette. Maybe I should call this guitar the Cococopper guitar??

Lovely guitar! Stunning appointments and I look forward to hearing about how it sounds when it is further adorned with strings.
Best, Jayne |

Looks fab. Great combination of woods. Very tasty. May I ask what you used to get the oxidized colours on the copper? Thinking of making a wood body reso and the cover plate would look great like that. Russ Parker

Thanks Russ! I've experimented quite a bit with different oxidation processes - so far what I have found works best is a mixture of ammonia (common household cleaner) and sea salt - for the blue colour at least. And my best results have been wiping salt onto the wet copper piece so that you leave globs to eat away at the copper, then somehow suspend it over the ammonia face down. Once it's all done you have to let it dry completely before wiping something over it to protect it. I use CA glue but CA glue reacts with ammonia if it's still wet and turns a weird milky-white. I would definitely protect it with a varnish or something at least to avoid any change in the patina as well as to give you the dark blue colours. When it's dry it's alight blue colour. Hope that helps, if you have any questions don't hesitate to ask, I'd be happy to help. -Zach

Back inlay is done and I decided it looks too bare with just the copper inlay... so I inlayed 2 black lines that emerge from behind the copper piece. That did it, I think the composition is much nicer this way.

The past 2 years I have been going simpler and simpler with my designs (and really liking the simplicity). This is my favourite binding and purfling scheme - ebony/all black. I think it really shows off the beauty of the wood this way and when nature dishes out wood like this, why not show it off?!

Thanks Zack. I will give it a try on brass and see what happens. I am also moving towards simpler accents when the wood is so beautiful. Just looking at many classical guitars, rosewood body and binding with a simple maple purfling is what made me start thinking that way. Also, simple done well is better than complicated done not so well. In my case anyway. Lol. Russ

Cool, I couldn't agree more, simplicity is most often times best. Well good luck with that, I'm sure you'll have fun in the process! -Zach
