Wow.....New Mixer!!
For the past 4 years or so, I've been mostly using a Yamaha MG16XU mixer with a variety of EV powered boxes......either ZXA1s or ELX112s, sometimes with EV powered subs. I've been happy with the mixer, it has nice pre-amps and effects, but it does have a lot more features than I use, and as it is mounted in a rack case with a four rack unit drawer (full of leads and spares) underneath it, and is pretty heavy, and sometimes awkward to lug if I can't use a trolley.
I don't need the number of channels I used to, as I'm mainly doing solo gigs, and when I do duo gigs, we use my duo partner's mixer. I also have an older Yamaha MG82CX mixer that I have been using lately for smaller gigs, and when I'm jammed into a corner, and space is an issue. I decided to store the rack and bigger desk away, and only use it when more channels are needed, and use the smaller desk. As I travel a bit for gigs, I always have a spare of everything, and decided to buy another small mixer to use as a back up, and picked up a Soundcraft Notepad 12FX for $250. I played a gig this morning and decided to use the little Soundcraft to get to know my way around it in case I ever have to use it. All I can is Wow!!!....the pre-amps are amazing and the effects are just as good. I was mixing on the fly and after two songs, I didn't have to touch it again. Vocals were warm and clean, and it's the best I've ever had my guitar sounding. My wife turned up halfway through the gig and commented on the sound quality, and she didn't know I was trying the new mixer. I'm even going to replace my bigger desk with a larger Soundcraft model. The difference between the Yamaha and the Soundcraft is night and day, which I didn't really expect, given the size and price of the Soundcraft, and that I was totally happy with the Yamaha. I'm definitely a convert. I should add that I've been using P.A. systems and playing in bands and performing solo for over 30 years, and have owned a variety of different mixers including Yamaha, Peavey, Allen and Heath, and Alesis. I've heard nothing but praise of the Soundcraft stuff. That and a powered Yamaha or QSC will be my next purchase.

When I play duo gigs, my partner in crime has an EFX12. It's great, and I think I'll get either the EFX8 or 12 to replace my bigger Yamaha.

What are the functional differences between the EFX series and the Notepad models?

Pretty much this. The Notepad effects are Lexicon, but very basic compared to the EFX series. I only use reverb, but the Notepad series sounds good (only one to pick from...probably a small room type). Only 4 XLR inputs as well. |

I am thinking of getting the SoundCraft EX8 to use as a front end into a Bose S1 for small gigs for a duo consisting of 2 acoustic guitars and 2 vocals.
It would also be nice to be able to use the Bose S1 as a monitor when we play bigger venues. My question is this: Can I take individual line outs from the 4 channels we will be using on the EFX8 to give to a soundman for the FOH mix? i.e. the Soundman will have individual post FX feeds for each guitar and each microphone.

Why not let the sound guy do what he does at his board and send you separate monitor mixes?
