Default Monitor question.

While talking to a friend we came up with a question about monitors. We have never played on stage but was wondering what you would hear in your monitors during performance. On stage would be drums, bass to one side, guitar to one side, singer in the center. I see the guitar, bass and singer having monitors but what do they hear from the monitors in front of them?? A mix??

They hear what they want to hear. Some have to have the drums predominate in the mix for keeping time, others want to hear a melody line, bass players may want the drums up and no vocals. Playing guitar I always wanted drums and bass, no vocals.

Most monitor set-ups today are mixed with the same attention as the main mix.

As a drummer I want to hear rhythm guitar and lead vocals, and that's it.

As a guitarist I want to hear lead vocals, my guitar and the drums.

...and as a bassist i want to hear rhythm guitar, lead vocals, drums (predominantly the bass drum), and my bass.

as mentioned before, it's whatever you want to hear, but it's usually a mix of hearing yourself and hearing something to keep yourself in check with the rest of the band.

As a guitarist I can do fine with only hearing the drums (or even only the bass drum/hi-hat/ride cymbal)...If I can have something coming out to help keep time, I'll be fine. I write the majority of the songs for the band, So I know what guitar parts match up with what vocals. The vocals are nice to hear, occasionally...
