Default My new musical interest

Go figure that I would start learning and loving COWBOY TUNES! There are two great things that draw me to them:

- Most of these tunes were written in New York or Hollywood (Cole Porter wrote "Don't Fence Me In"!!), so I don't feel like I'm desecrating them just because I wasn't born in Texas. It's the same kind of irony as Americans imitating Beatles imitating Americans.

- These songs are designed specifically to be played by one or two acoustic guitars, and sung without amplification. You don't sit there wishing somebody'd come by with a drum kit and a PA.

I promise that if y'all attempt stuff like "Back in the Saddle", you'll end up grinning sheepishly the whole time. It's a great change of pace!! Then, when y'all get into it and find some really cool, obscure stuff, please share with me. My favorite so far is "The Dreary, Dreary Life", the chorus of which goes like this:

Half past four, the noisy cook will roar
Whoop - a - whoop - a - HEY!
Slowly you will rise, with sleepy-feeling eyes
the sweet, dreamy night passed away...

Very cool! My father gave me a CD of cowboy tunes for Christmas, but I haven't had a chance to listen to it much. Now I'm curious to give a real good listen . . .

You have a 415 right? That is the perfect guitar for western songs.

Sounds like fun to me, and THAT to me anyway, is the whole reason for playing music.....for enjoyment. I was thinking....it used to be "country western" music and somehow that became "country and western" music and then "country" music and "western" music. Country music went on to become popluar and western music has faded into the background. Doesn't Michael Martin Murphy have some kind of a western festival featuring his more western style of music? Seems to me he was taking his show on tour. I know he has done some recordings. I enjoy different music so I think it would be fun to go to one of his festivals.

MAKE it a GREAT day!!!

Discovering 'Riders In the Sky' a few years back got me started on a huge 'cowboy song' thing. Some of my most favorite stuff, and Michael Martin Murphey does many of them. That led into listening more and more to some of the originators of this music.
I became 'twanger the better' to my friends.
It's great fun and a much bigger (and overlooked) batch of music than people realize.
Thanks for bringing it up!
Mike

If I were going to get a true 'cowboy' guitar, I'd go in this direction:

http://www.collingsguitars.com/cowboy.htm

But I'm not that much of a specialist to have several guitars. I really do love my 415, it does a terrific job.

In the spirit of that, Collings has got some of these junk cowboy guitars too (nothing against cowboy, just the guitar). Maybe we can get Uncle Bob to do something about the Taylors. I mean neutral and burst are just so bland, why not have one with Smoochy and Rainbow Randolph.

I'd rather ride an old paint than play a new one, but the Collings models look a whole lot more tasteful to my eye.
