Thanks Ken. Yes, Pernambuco does oxidize and gets a little darker and richer in color value. Naturally, finish really makes this wood pop with great color.

Default Fretboard Switcheroo: Pernambuco to African Blackwood / Fretboard inlays revealed

So we had to replace the original fretboard. Due to my availability to pick up the guitar in early June (I work overseas), I decided I didn't want to wait several months for a new Pernambuco fretboard to dry out to an acceptable level for Tim to work with it. So, I suggested we switch to an African Blackwood fretboard that Tim already had in his shop. He was happy to oblige and has continued with the build.

I came across this picture of an 1897 Martin 2-42 over a year ago at vintagemartin.com. I loved the simple snowflake inlays and asked Tim to make a general reproduction of them for my guitar. This is yet another visual element of the "19th century meets 21st century" theme:

....here is a picture of these inlays cut out of MOP:

and here are the inlays laying on the ABW fretboard (not glued in yet):

Default More progress on the fretboard

Like the original fretboard, this ABW fretboard will also have a sharp taper on the lower left side:

A glimpse of how the fretboard will look on the body:

The ABW looks real nice with your herringbone.

I totally agree Dennis. Sometimes unexplained events have a way of working out for the best in the end.

That switcheroo was a good call. I've always preferred darker fretboards - particularly when paired with light to medium tonewoods. The contrast brings a sort of visual balance IMO. The inlays will also "pop" more.

Sounds like we are all in consensus that this was a good call by GaultierRedon14.

Yeah, well, I preferred the Pernambuco, but the ABW will certainly look great! The neck and headstock will be painted black, so I had intended to have the bold contrast between the P fretboard and the black neck/headstock. Still, the ABW fretboard should look gorgeous with the MOP inlays and EVO gold frets.

Default Some finishing photos

The neck assembly being painted black...

Finishing the top....

and the back...

...and the sides.

The Pernambuco looks warm and brilliant under finish. Nice work!

Tim, I never did figure out how to take a picture of myself when I was spraying! Plus my hair gets all funky with the straps from the mask. You have a better 'do' for wearing a mask The Pernambuco is indeed looking great under that finish! Very nice.

Just found this thread and read thru it from the beginning.

The only thing I can say is wow. Tim your workmanship is simply amazing and you make it all look so easy. I love the wood choices and I love the design elements. I also agree the new ABW fretboard is step up - looks very classy. Love the taper! Love the inlays! Pretty well love everything about this guitar.

I really love the black neck and the way the fingerboard extension tapers ... reminds me a bit of an old Stauffer ... love it!

Yes, it's turning out great so far, and the 19th century details are slowly coming together. I did, of course, take the idea for the tapered fretboard from the old Stauffer guitars, as you mentioned, David. I'm getting excited to finally see the Rodgers tuning machines--I just received confirmation that they're finished and ready to ship. I haven't seen a picture of them, however, so I'll have to wait until Tim receives them and sends some photos.
That's the only other update I have right now!
