Default Thomas Féjoz 7-strings MD build - Euro spruce / Madagascar

My first commission has started !

The luthier is Thomas Fejoz, and based in France. I guess he's pretty much unknown on this forum, but he's one of the finest French luthiers nowadays. Balance and character is what comes to mind with his guitars. Be sure to check his website : www.thomasfejoz.com

So, 7-strings, with a low B, supported by a 25.4 - 27 multiscale. Here are the specs :

Body :
Modified dreadnought body. You can find specs and photos here just to get an idea, but this is not my build :
http://www.thomasfejoz.com/fr/les-mo...nned-fret.htm#
Basically it's a dreadnought with a tighter waist and narrower depth (a tad more than an OM).

Woods :
- Jura spruce top
- Madagascar rosewood back and sides
- Honduran mahogany neck
- Ebony fingerboard
- Brazilian rosewood bridge

Ergonomics :
- 7-strings multiscale : 25.4" - 27", perpendicular fret around 7-8
- 52mm (~2") neck width, 68mm (~2.68") string spacing at the bridge.
- cutaway
- Laskin style armrest (maple)
- side sound port
- LR Baggs Anthem electronics

Cosmetics :
- rosette : old growth EIR and curly mahogany
- flamed maple binding and armrest
- ebony or madagascar head veneer

All I have for now is a picture of the back and sides. More to come ! The build should end around mid-june.

Not familiar with Thomas but sounds like a very interesting build. Interesting set of Madi as well. Look forward to seeing more.

Beautiful wood. The maple arm rest will test a builders craftsmanship. My hat is off for his confidence and bravery.

Thank you for him John !

If I may ask, why that maple armrest would be more a test than with another wood ?

Thanks !

What an interesting guitar! My baritone is tuned to B and has a 27.5 inch scale so your 7 string sounds like it will be a great combination of a standard guitar and short scale baritone.

One question though (asked respectfully by someone who travels with guitars and sells them internationally) – do you need to use Brazilian rosewood for the bridge? I don’t know if it adds anything to the sound, but unless it comes with the requisite CITES 1 paperwork it could blow away your ability to travel internationally with the guitar or to ever sell it to anyone outside your own country.

Thanks for starting the thread and looking forward to seeing how this guitar develops.

Hi Col,

About the BRW bridge, it is kind of standard on his guitars I think...but I sure he has CITES papers. I didn't ask yet, so thanks for reminding me that :-)

You nailed it, that guitar is going to be exactly in the midst of standard guitar and baritone... Baritone for the extra bass range, but standard guitar for the overall behaviour :-)

Thomas and I are both very curious and excited to see how it will turn out !

If John doesn't mind me chirping in about the maple armrest, I'll give the answer. Maple glue joints show every inconsistency, and they are very unforgiving. Depending on the style of armrest your luthier is using, it's already a difficult enough task to do in a dark colored wood which allows for a certain amount of imperfection. But in maple he'll have to be really clean for it to look like a seamless armrest. A fun challenge for sure!

Thanks for the input, I didn't know about this ! We'll see how it goes but I fully trust his abilities. All the guitars he made that I've seen and tried are flawless from an esthetic point of view
The armrest will be a Laskin type.
I had a hard time trying to find maple armrest pictures...they do not seem to appear frequently...maybe that's the reason I dont know !

Future will tell anyway ;-)

And here is the rosette.

Since the guitar has already lots of features (7-strings, multiscale, cutaway, soundport, armrest), I wanted the rosette to be very simple : slim and woody. All the bling in the ergonomics in
other words. I let Thomas full latitude and he came up with up this.

Oh and the top is Jura spruce. I'll post a pic as soon as I get one !

Old growth EIR and curly mahogany rosette :

And here is the top :

Jura spruce (the Jura massif is between France and Swiss).
I don't know if the two darker streaks will remain visible but I like it !

The sides are jointed, linings glued and the top and back are braced !
I like the wide body and narrow depth look.
The box should be assembled today.
Bindings and purflings next week.

A few pics :

Love the coloring on that rosewood, it makes me want to go and get a block of chocolate!

Great to see it coming along.

looks quite beautiful and arouses my curiosity about the sound..
to get an impression of a clean maple armrest you could take a look here...
or here... and here about the building..
