Default Epiphone Truss Rod Problem

Hi,

Bought a used Epi EJ 200 CE which I took to my local set up guy to have the action lowered and light (10s) put on. He tells me that the nut has sheared off the end of the truss rod so he can't tweek the neck relief/tension.

I've got string buzz on all the wound strings from around fret 9 up. I'm asking for advice on what to do. Should I just sell the Epi (I can easily get back what I paid for it) or spend the money to get the truss rod sorted or will putting heavier gauge strings (11s or 12s) sort out the buzz. I can stop the buzz by bending the neck with my left hand while playing the note so it's really close to a perfect action.

The thing is, the guitar is absolutely mint, is really easy to play (I'm a beginner) sounds good and I really love it.

What would you do?

Alan

PS If I keep the guitar, is it worth putting a bone nut and saddle on it it or am I trying to polish a turd?

10s are very light for a jumbo. The "light" strings on my acoustics are 12s; I have 10s only on my electrics.

I'd give 12s a try, but I wouldn't be surprised if 13s (acoustic mediums) were even better. They'd probably sound a lot better than the lights too.

One potential option: http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Truss_ro...etails#details

You could take it back to the repairperson and have him split the cost for the repair tool - you get the repair done and he gets the tool, each for half the price of the tool.
