Need a preamp or eq for the Martin “growl”
Hi all - I have a Martin OM42 with a K&K trinity running into a AER
60. Love the tone acoustically with its big bass and that signature growl. Plugged in not so much- it gets kinda woofy and boxy and actually worse with the mic, so usually just running the one bridge PU . The AER has that eq switch that I use to brighten it up but no cigar… any recos out there for either preamps or and eq to tame her? Thanks! CS

You'll get lots of replies and opinions. My opinion is ToneDexter.

Tell us which blender do you use to feed the mic. Is it the Trinity preamp ? External or internal pre ?
Personally I always prefer to use a mic added to the pickup but we had some detailed auditioning for a good friend's live rig. He uses the same AER amp and we both liked the amped sound without the internal mic better. Guitars were Collings OM2H and Merrill OM28. Did you try plugging directly into the AER with no K&K preamp and engaging the "Contour" button on the AER ? Beside that: How many mic do dial in ? My experience is: AER + K&K passive makes a great combo. AER + K&K active not so.

ToneDexter or LR Baggs VoicePrint DI. I switched to the VPDI for ease of use. ToneDexter is every bit as good, or perhaps better in terms of audiophile level fidelity.

Yes - I’m just using the pre that was included with the Trinity system/ simply a volume level to mix levels of mic and bridge. Also using the contour switch with the Martin- any other guitar sounds like an Icepick with contour. The Tonedexter seems like rocket science to me - prefer something more traditional if possible.

You might want to see if an LR Bagg Session Align does the trick for you. The saturate control really brings out great tone in carbon fiber acoustic with a K&K.

Yep. The VoicePrint DI solved this for my CEO-7. Though it's a 00 body, with the K & K it has plenty of woofiness when amplified. I suspect that as Dave notes above that a Tonedexter would also be a great choice.
