I kinda paid a few hundred bucks for a 1947 Gibson LG-2 at Matt Umanov’s a while back.
I say “kinda” because what happened was that I used to collect first edition books. When I come upon the ‘47 LG-2, I was trying to figure out if I could match its value. It turns out that a book I paid a couple hundred bucks for more than covered the cost of the guitar - it was the first UK Hardcover appearance of Conrad’s Heart of Darkness, in a collection of 3 novellas entitled Youth from 1902. I got it based on my gut, but had no clue it was worth 10x what I paid for it.

I bought a J-45 for incredible price in 2003. Someone put the wrong price tag on a brand new J-45 with pickup, it had the Kulson tuners with white plastic buttons. I brought it to the sales people’s attention and they sold it to me for the price on the tag. Wish I still had that guitar.
Also just got a brand new 2020 414ce for $1800.00 tax and shipping included. I was sent an email for a new old stock Taylor 414ce Rosewood Deluxe for $1600.00 plus tax shipping included. I had just missed the New Old Stock 410ce Rosewood for the same price. I order the guitar and a couple days go buy and the guitar had not been shipped. I called the music store to see what the hold up was and was told the guitar I had bought was no longer in stock so the manager gave me a special deal on a Brand new 414ce. My 414ce is an amazing sounding guitar and of course has that Talylor playability. The Ovangkol back and sides have the gloss finish and looks beautiful. I wish Taylor would gloss the 317e. I would have to say my two Wingerts purchased 16 years ago. They would cost 5 times what I paid for them today. I bought a new Martin back in 1992 and sold it 12 years later for more than I had paid for it.

My 2011 Larrivee D-09 $275 CDN.
Local buy on Kijiji 3 years ago, advertized for $500. Had to be too good to be true so I called the guy up and went to see it. Talked him down because of damage and cracked top that I had cleated after I bought it. Sounds fantastic

About six years ago I purchased an '89 Martin HD-28 from a songwriter in Nashville. I paid $1400 for it. It was in mint condition with the sales receipt from '89, original warranty card and a letter from Chris Martin congratulating the buyer on the purchase of a new Martin HD-28.

I got a new 2018 Martin omc-28e for $1200 last Black Friday. The store wanted it gone. The crazy part is that I had almost talked myself into buying
The exact same guitar a few months earlier for $2500, but decided I couldn’t afford it/charge it. |

Back in the late 1970s, I bought a FILTHY classical guitar in a hardshell case at a pawn shop for $50. I figured that if the guitar was garbage, the case could be salvaged.
I brought it home and started cleaning it with a face cloth, warm water and a little detergent. It had been covered with mud, dirt, dust and whatnot. As I cleaned it, I became aware of tool marks inside and for the first time, paid attention to the label. I had a handmade Manuel Contreres long scale classical from his Main Street shop in Madrid. Ebony fingerboard and bridge. Solid Spanish pine top. Indian rosewood sides and back. Black, white and red back purfling. It was a gorgeous instrument! I had a roommate who was about 6 and a half feet tall. His fingers had their own zip codes and he was trying to learn to play classical. I lent him the guitar and later in the year he bought it.

Yep! It’s way more guitar than I could otherwise afford. Baggs anthem in it sounds great too. I do kind of wish it was a short scale, but at the price I paid, Im ecstatic.

My best deals are the guitars I bought that say something to me. My worst deals were the ones that I was more concerned about $$$ than I was about the instrument.

In a last 15 years:
1951 Martin 0-15 $200 Bought from a garage sale buying friend. 1959 Gibson J-50, mint case, $59 Bought at an Antique Mall in a old lady’s booth. Both needed luthier repair. Both made profit. |

Mine is the Eastman E1D I just purchased at regular price of $500. A few supposedly nicer guitars can go to new homes now.

So far the best deal I’ve gotten is a new Yahama FG 800 I bought for my girl friend to learn on.. $200, not the best looking, but it’s amazing how well it sounds and plays with minor setup work, to my ear I’d have to spend $1500 to get close with other guitars, so it’s about the best value if seen...
