I foolishly sold an incredible 1970 Martin D-35 to fund an electric I thought I couldn't live without. The electric is gone and the guy won't sell me the D-35 back.

Can't blame him!

Cool

Yes, I regretted selling 3 Martin D-18 Authentic 1937 guitars. I now own the 4th of the same model. I'm not going to let this one go. In 2008 I owned my 2nd D-18 A and a 2008 Gibson Les Paul '59 Historic ri. Both gone. 12 years later I finally got a (4th) Martin D-18A and a (2nd) 2011 Gibson '59 Les Paul H reissue (Don Felder) and I'm happy and staying put.

1978 Guild D-50 NT. I bought it new and sold it a few years ago for what I thought would be a better guitar. I was wrong.

No regrets here. I've sold 3 this year, all because they just didn't work out after spending a year or so with each. They weren't blind buys. I was able to play them before buying. It's just taking a while to figure out what I like.

Regret isn't the right word but the one I miss the most and would buy back in a heartbeat is this one - a custom Martin 000-18GE with everything I love in a guitar:

1956 Gibson SJ. I still miss that guitar.

Martin OM 28 Adirondack (custom shop, early 90s). Back then I was not aware of the incredible high quality of that guitar, sold it to save some money to buy an OM42. Loved the OM42 but started to look around for the sound of that OM 28, tried and bought many. Compared an Authentic OM28 to a Merrill OM28. Now I'm happy with that Merrill OM28 but still can not forget that Martin OM28 from the 90s. Love to hear it again.

Yamaha FG 1979. Don't even know model! Only now I'm a more experienced player do I recognise how good it was. Moved up to a Gibson MK35. Not good. Lasted 1y. Then an Epiphone. How many others of my generation had similar journeys? Loads I suspect. Expensive trial and error now a thing of the past. Better advice. Better info. Much better guitars!

My 1972 Martin D-28 that I bought new and sold within the year (I managed to find another 1972 D-28 in pristine condition a few years ago).

A 1959 Gibson ES-355 with original case that I bought for $155 and sold soon after for $350. I thought I was rich!

An early Ampeg plexiglass Dan Armstrong with a fistfull of extra pickups.

I could keep going, but I'll stop now because it hurts too much.

I could probably write a long chapter if not a small book on the ones that got away, but I have to be realistic about my wants/needs as a guitar owner as well as the restrictions imposed by a smallish cabin whose humidity/temperature are difficult to control. Yes, I've owned and sold a bunch of terrific wooden guitars, but practically speaking carbon fiber guitars make the most sense for me. I previously owned an Emerald X20-12 that I sold, perhaps foolishly, but I've got another on order with features that I prefer - no electronics, satin finish, gig bag rather than another Hiscox case that I have little need for and take up too much storage space. One door closes, and another one opens...

Guitars I regret getting rid of? Over 41 years of playing, that's hard to say!

For Electric Guitars - probably my 2003 Gretsch Country Club. It had a killer neck, and sounded great for just about any music (just keep a handle on the feedback, when doing high gain stuff, and listen to it scream). I was broke in 2011, so I sadly had to sell it. Unfortunately, the 2003 Country Clubs are hard to come by, and unlike the later versions, are built a little differently, so they sound a bit livelier.

Acoustics - the one that stands out is my late 70s Guild G212NT I bought at the Chicago Guitar Show 7 years ago. It sounded killer (possibly the best sounding 12-string I've ever had), but it weighed a ton!. I also noticed, that the bridge and neck were starting to pull up, and being tight for money at the time (in 2014) for the repairs needed, I got rid of it.
