Default NMD: Warm Audio WA87

So, all the talk about Warm Audio mics had my interest already and my Sweetwater rep recommended the WA87 as an excellent choice for me. I was looking to add a nice large diaphragm to the collection. It just arrived a little bit ago so here is a very quick demo. I am going straight into my Apollo Twin into Studio One 3. No eq or processing. The way you see the mic sitting on the shock mount is where it was during the demo. Guitar is about 10 to 12 inches away from the mic. Typically, I will put a 2” thick absorption panel behind the mic if I am “serious” about what I am doing and will also face a different way. Anyway, there are a couple of panels on the wall behind the amps. I think I will really like this mic as I already like how it sounds without doing anything extra other that using the 80 hz roll off. It is set cardiod. Oh, and don’t mind my extreme southern accent.

Very cool and congrats, looks well made
The head basket does have that 87 shape

So are you still getting the 251 you ordered or did you change your mind ?

My very first experience recording myself was actually in a commercial Post Production studio. Used two Neumann U87 ai mic's, one for vocal and one for guitar at the same time . It was a great introduction into the world of recording
The 87 may well be the most ubiquitous studio mic on the planet today.

But of course. . This mic was the other I wanted to add. It is also a deep rabbit hole. I am afraid that I have started looking at 500 series outbaord gear too. I will bankrupt myself before it’s all over.

Yes it's a thin crust over the quagmire

But the good news is that if you are in it to record predominately yourself you can scale your purchases accordingly

I have over the last 19 years focused on 2 good channels , knowing that I wanted the ability to record using two mics on acoustic guitar.

That will give you more or less the same LDC situation I have. One decent FET and one decent Tube

I will give it a proper going through over the long weekend. You may even get a chance to hear me “sing”.

I do a lot of multitracking where I play lots of different guitars but, like you, should really only “need” two good channels. I do very little recording where I would need more than that although I do play with a couple of other guys in a semi-acoustic cover song trio. They help me with vocals on my originals. Any demos we make of us I can do fine with the inputs and preamps I currently have.

For a first-time recording with your new WA87, it sounds excellent!

Thanks SpruceTop. I have some other good mics and have learned a lot about mic placement along the way. It will be interesting to see just how good the mic sounds after I place everything properly.

Okay. I recorded some more using this mic. A little guitar and a little vocals. I did each track separately. I used my L OO Standard that I purchased just before Christmas. Still did not use any eq or effects and only the high pass (80 hz) on the mic itself. The mic is very quiet and transparent. You can see in the picture that this time I was oriented to where I was facing the big part of my room. The room is treated somewhat but I still usually will isolate mics a little with some movable panels I have. I reall like this mic. I will see how it does when I use it own the guys I play covers with. They can actually sing.

Hey sound great you are right it is very transparent and very smooth.
What would really interesting is if when you get the 251 you do a shootout just like above ( looks like you have another boom style stand over on the left of the photo) , so can configure the mics to be right in line vertically one upside down and one right side almost touching head baskets) and play and sing into both at the same time .
If the the 251 is true to the vintage version concept it should have just slightly more high end detail if not quite as warm overall as the 47 .

This recording is of an original song I co-wrote with my collaborating partner who lives in Austin. I used the WA 87 for all four parts. I used my Taylor 12 and my Gibson L OO for the rhythm parts and my HD 28 for the lead. I did use several of my UAD plug ins during mixing. I am not worried about mistakes in my playing or singing. I just wanted to show what the mic sounds like after some processing. I am still learning that side of things. I do know this, this mic is awesome and I rate as at least as good as my more expensive (but different) Shure KSM 313 ribbon. Hope you guys like the tune.
