Books had been written about what my father didn’t know about fixing things but that didn’t stop him from bringing home the following in various states of drivability: the aforementioned TR-3, Morgan, 12 cylinder XKE, MG-TD. He also dabbled in other exotic and semi-exotic vehicles that were not sports cars. These included a ‘67 GTO, Armstrong Siddeley, 1950 Ford Woodie wagon, and a collection of 56-57 Mark II Lincolns. I'm a relative neophyte, by comparison, having owned two Mazda Miatas and a MGB.

I wasn't bashing anyone or at least that wasn't my intent. I feel the quotes are a little out of context. My post is from my experience owning sports cars. I couldn't get a vet to race me not once.

I think that new 'Vet' looks nicer than this US$157K Honda NSX.(on left)

One wonders if they are still excessively loose in the rear end. Stunt drivers have long called Vettes "beasts" because they are hard to handle and I've seen them lose to AWD Nissans on the straight track.

Personally, I'd prefer a street legal Camaro. I guess I'm not their target demographic.

But they were all front-engine rear wheel drive cars.
Switching to a mid-engine should improve balance .... now (as you mention) if only they had AWD.

The new Corvette is actually not targeted at middle aged men.

I am on one of the Porsche boards quite a bit and i can tell you that a lot of 911 guys are considering a change to the new Vette. It is an impressive car in every way. But i cannot stress this enough to anyone considering it. NEVER buy the 1st year production of a new model. They are always loaded with bugs. I’ll be taking one for a test ride for sure..

There is still one thing going for the Porsche. Rear sears that fold down and make a nice big shelf.[IMG]

Except for some minor front end similarities in the curves- that glorious new Vette has nothing in common with a 70's Vette.
For 60,000- astonishing car, almost inexpensive.

Incredible car for the money.
I'm sure it will be a huge success but der Geist in post #22 does have a good point regarding 1st run models.
The motor industry has a world-wide history of fixing existing series 1 faults in series 2 cars.

Nowhere near in class as the Vette, but my current daily driver is a 1985 Celica GT-S that I picked up a year ago.

It's a fun car to drive and I don't need a computer science degree to work on it if something is not quite right.

I like it - it reminds me of a similar vintage VW Scirroco that I lusted after although looking at the two side by side, your Celica definitely gets the nod....

How is that in relation to the old Supra? They were pretty good rice rocket pony cars back in the day.

They got 6 cyl engines about when Ford put the roller cam and with headers V8s in Mustangs and when you started seeing more cars with turbos. They handled well but live axle Ford and GM cars got better about that time too.

The starting price of the new Corvette can indeed seem reasonable if you consider the average sticker price of a car now, and how sophisticated very common cars are now. To get where I'm coming from, I believe the Honda 4 cylinder in some cars and SUVs is 270some HP. My wife's minivan and all the series have 292 HP, with Chrysler and (Dodge) Toyota making sport models. Having done car shopping in the past few months, I was shocked by how many and how often people go above that average sticker price.

IIRC, the Supra coming back starts at $50 grand.

I'm guessing the new Corvette or a new Supra will be very nice but very niche cars while all of car buying and ownership is changing.

It would be nice if more sports car enthusiasm would be off of public roads. I associated with some clubs when I was into it and thought that was much safer. One did races on ice, the other on closed large parking lots and a race course. When we did our return from cabin yesterday it was really clear that sports and performance cars stood out for drivers making poor choices regardless of the car or driver age. Yes, that's both of sexagenarian and having lost a family member to an fool behind the wheel showing.
