Default Maton guitars

I often hear that Maton guitars are overbuilt, what do people exactly mean with that?

I've always assumed it means they're heavily braced and use thicker tops, but maybe that's not what others mean?

Default Maton guitars

I guess that's the meaning too, that may explain why so many people don't like Maton's acoustic sound?

Well, now you are armed with a huge list to search on Youtube.... go ahead. You may be surprised!

To the OP - Yes, generally Maton guitars are considered to be built fairly strong, and I believe they have slightly thicker braces and tops/sides etc. That does lead to a slightly stiffer sound, but hey, some people like that.

I've also played a few Maton that have been played hard, and they sound a lot less stiff than a brand new one. I have a Maton ECW80C which I love.

To give you an indication about how tough these guitars are - There is a well known Maton story about a guy who had an argument with his girlfriend, and she grabbed his Maton and swung ot overhead and hit him with it. Knocked him out and broke his collarbone, but the guitar didn't suffer any damage at all.

Same girlfriend a few weeks prior had thrown the same guitar (in it's case) out the 3rd floor window during an argument and it landed on the concrete below just missing some people dining in a cafe at ground level.

When the guy went to retrieve the guitar, it was undamaged in the case and only needed one string retuned. THAT is what is meant by 'overbuilt'...

I once briefly played a Maton jumbo-couldn't tell you which model-and it was a very sweet sounding and eminently playable guitar. Quite a small neck as I recall.

Just watched the video of this amazing man and his wonderful playing. It was a bit disconcerting, however, to see him bending the neck outwards to achieve a "wow" effect. I would have thought this was detrimental to the guitar. Do any of you do this?

Tommy does lots of things with his guitars that I wouldn't do to mine... just look at them. They're beat to hell!

Maybe that's what folks mean when they say Matons are overbuilt.... they are built to take what TE dishes out.

He is amazing and plays a Maton. There is a used one that I demoed at G.C. and it has a very tight sound and does not vibrate well in my opinion. They want $1499 for the guitar, it is a T.E. signature model. Spruce top Mahogany back and sides. It plays nice and has good sustain but not my bag of chips! Very heavy and cumbersome, triple-000 or double-00 shape no cutaway with electronics.

ukejon, best reply ever!

I've never played a Maton, but I'd certainly keep my options open.

But the OP's question was not what do we think of them, but rather, what do you mean by 'over built'.

Yeah over built is referring to the thickness of the woods and the bracing, they can be quite a heavy instrument. My brother has the Tommy Emanuel edition one mentioned above, its very heavy duty in comparison to my cole clark.

I know a few very experienced musicians who just love them and would not play anything else.

Sorry, I disagree.
All those artists listed by ukejon have one thing in common.
They play live.
Plugged in.
Amplified.
That's where Matons work best.
Tough, strong workhorses with excellent electronics.
Acoustically? ..... different story, but I do believe they're working on it.

Thanks for those answers, I've tried four Maton, 3 EGB808 TE and one standart EGB808. In my opinion they sound pretty thin in acoustic, but sound great with an amp.
Some says that what is required for a good electrified sound, is not what is required for a good acoustic sound. In other words a guitar cannot be optimized both for acoustic and electrified. Does it make sense to you?
