Another reason to be psyched about my BTO GA coming in June - sinker redwood with ovangkol back and sides - can't wait to smell-er-hear-er-see it-whatever, I'm looking forward to a feast for the senses!

Most of my guitars are rosewood, but the two guitars in our house that really jump out as having a nice smell are my wife's old 1965 Gibson LG-0 (all mahogany) and my Taylor 514CE (cedar over mahogany). Only the mahogany smells shows up. I live in Western Red Cedar country, so I know very well what it smells like, but I have never gotten that smell from my guitar. But the mahogany is so strong, it's almost like vanilla.

Of course, I like the smell...

Some say the smell of fresh guitars is intoxicating. Sometimes I think you are actually smelling some of the glue.

When we picked up our BTOs about all you could smell was either glue or finish (probably the prior). Not a ton of wood smell in the Taylors. Not really sure why. My wife's Martin has a great mahogany smell to it.

My 2001 Taylor 414 koa b/s (bought new) still smells as sweet as day one. I confess, I'm a guitar sniffer.

Default I sniff

You know, I once thought I was the only one that did this but I am glad to hear I was wrong and I am not weird or something. When I open the case I take a big whiff. It actually motivates me a bit to start playing. You know, you get in that mind set kind of like a meditation.

Both my taylors smell funny.. a bit of a sour smell, one is Koa and the other Maple, but My lakewood's Rosewood and the Badens Cedar/Mahogany smells great though...

Hi friends!
I Have noticed a big variety of smells in different guitars.
As the guitars ages the smell fades away more or less. I have a Ibanez AW100Ce that I always have kept in it's case. It is still smelling strong from Mahogany and glue..
I recently bought a 2009 Fall LTD cocobolo GSCE and it has a special smell of the cocobolo wood. I read an article about cocobolo and it has some oils in the wood that makes it smell this way - like other similar woods.
Some woods - like cocobolo - are actually a bit tricky when it comes to work with. The dust can cause an allergic reaction to sensitive people.

The oils in some of these woods also makes them a bit tricky to glue.
Anyone who has heard of problems with glue joints in guitars with for example cocobolo bodies?
Regards :
Per
(Currently in a hotel room on the Isle of Man away from my beloved guitars in Sweden - But luckily with my even more beloved wife!)

Gotta disagree with the lack of smell of mahogany. I owned a Martin d-15 and that never lost it's woodsy aroma.

Question.. Does a satin or gloss finish impact the smell of the wood?

Smile Koa fragrance

I have to say, from the day I received my 422K it has had a terrific smell. I always enjoy opening the case and taking her out. Even after all these years, smells as great as it did the first day.

My other guitars do not have anywhere near the level of fragrance the Koa does.

I admit to sniffing my guitars sometimes, but the height of looking for a sensual experience with a guitar was at Guitar Center a few weeks ago when I saw a young man, maybe 15 or so, smell a solid body electric. All I could think was, "That kid is REALLY into this!"
