Default 1999 Martin HD-28LSV with ‘Tony Rice mods SOLD

For sale or trade is the absolute best sounding, coolest looking Martin Dred I’ve ever owned. Professionally spec’d to look and sound like Tony Rice’s 1935 D28. This is an early production 1999 HD-28 LSV with some of the tightest grained Red Spruce you’ll find which, combined with the larger soundhole, makes for an absolute beast of a guitar. Huge bass but also accentuated mids that provide clarity and balance that’s rare for Martin dreds. No scooped mids here. Of note, some of the guitars of this era were made with the coveted Smokies tops and rarely come up on the market. Martin no longer makes this guitar and only put Red Spruce tops on them for a short period.

It is in used not abused shape. Plenty of pick wear under the pick guard, various small dings, indentations, buckle rash, etc. Some of the finish has rubbed off the back of the neck. This guitar has been played. That said, this is a 21 yr old guitar that oozes character, mojo, and looks the part of a classic, vintage Martin. Everything is only cosmetic. No structural issues at all and has just been thoroughly inspected and set up by the fine folks at Guitar Tex in San Antonio. Its a museum piece but not for its perfection. Think of it as a Pre-War distress level 1! Has a 1 and 3/4 nut with a mod v neck and 2 and 1/4 at the bridge. The neck is full but not a bat. Pretty perfect if you ask me. Standard specs found online. Comes with Martin case.

There have been some professional mods to this guitar to get it as close to the 1935 Tony Rice 28 as possible:

1. The soundhole has been further enlarged to meet Tony Rice specs

2. Refretted with stainless steel wire

3. Popsicle brace removed

4. Finish softly steel-wooled to satin finish

5. Martin logo removed to replicate Tony Rice’s headstock.

6. Waverly tuners installed

7. Slotted bridge with unslotted ebony pins

8. Upgraded pickguard faux Tortoise shell

Happy to add cash to right deal. If you’re a dred player, flat picker, etc, this is the guitar for you. LOUD but balanced. Let me know if you have a cool 000/OM to trade or $2900 net to me. Located at Randolph AFB, TX. Thanks!
