Default Holidays

Anyone got any holidays, or as this is chiefly an American populated forum, vacations coming soon? I'm bored at work on a Sunday and just booked tickets to Bologna in Italy for June. Will be my first time abroad since I was in Japan three years ago. Really excited, the food and architecture looks amazing. I've been to Italy once for a Bob Dylan gig (Genoa) and I loved it.

Hey Foxo, no real plans for me. I like to take day trips and some of those will involve hiking.

Italy sounds exciting! Is there anything specific you're planning on seeing? Looks like an old city.

Jealous. Is Italy "abroad" if you live in Scotland?

I've recently been craving a return to Paris, but I think I've gotten to the age where I'd never survive the flight from the US.

Most excited about the food really. I still fantasise about the ravioli I had in Genoa! Will definitely take in some of the beautiful churches and cathedrals though.

Haha, it's under three hours on the plane so not far.

That's a shame that you can't stand long distance flying - I'm lucky, I tend to fall asleep after having a few drinks so I don't mind travelling. Have still never been to France, it's on the bucket list though.

Foxo, My Daughter and Son in Law went to Italy for two weeks a few years ago and they loved it too! They have friends that live there so they were able to see more with the help of their friends local connections. Their photos were spectacular and I'd love to "holiday " there as well. Enjoy your trip!

Thanks Joe! Glad your daughter and son-in-law had a great time. Just a wee three night break for me but that should be enough time to stuff myself with lasagne, bolognese and other local delicacies and take in some of the local sights.

People don't really have holidays (they call 'em 'vacations' here) in the US. We work like crazy and then retire!

Hi Neil,
I have been to Italy, Florence Naples and a few other places. We travelled with a small group of photographer pals .. mostly by train which was ... interesting.

We used to go to France, Greece, Spain and the Canaries a lot and I visited Canada and the north east of US in 1980, New England in 89, Texas in 2004 and a San Francisco to Dallas road trip in 2005 - I think we stayed in motels for two nights in three weeks, as a Yahoo group of pals invited us to stay with them on the way.

2006 I had my heart problem, visited Africa in 2007 and the insurance for me cost more than the holiday for both of us.

After my cancer in 2017 I'm un-insurable and due to other issues, I can no longer travel.

My advice is travel while you can!

So much to see and do in Italy, how wonderful for you, Neil.

If I were going there, I’d make the trip for what is probably the very best pizza in the world :

However, I see it’s a five hour drive from Bologna.

(And yes, you really should visit France one day. )

Thanks! Will most certainly leave the dieting at home.

Good advice Andy - that's shocking that your travel insurance could be so much. I remember a colleague who had some medical problems was quoted £6000 for a trip to China for travel insurance and had to cancel plans. I was a little worried as I had a few medical conditions to declare including bipolar disorder but it turned out at a fairly reasonable £25.

Are you from France Aimelie? Believe it or not I didn't even get round to trying pizza when I was last in Italy! I look to rectify that this time.

Bien sûr que oui.

I’m way down in the southwest (any further south and I’d need to learn to speak Spanish and Basque).

My wife and I are traveling to Portugal in a week. 10 days there, then a few more in Paris.

Just starting to plan a trip to Italy on 2023. Maybe Bologna. Probably Assisi.
