That’s a word that seemed to pass the test of time… until it didn’t.😉
Cool used to be the berries, now it's strictly from squaresville.

The word often used today to replace cool is “fire”.
Go figure.

Squaresville, isn't that something Maynard would say to Dobie Gillis?

I also do not know where the modern use of 'hack' came from. It used to mean 'capable of doing something.'

"I need all these things moved to the other side of the garage. Can you hack it?"

"I can hack it."

Sometimes I think they just make stuff up to keep things 'fresh.'

Funny, I use that word when asked what kind of guitarist I am….”me, I’m just a hack. Move along, nothing to see here!” Bahahaha😂

I haven't heard the word used in that sense since the mid to late 1960s.
Most often it was used in variants of "I just couldn't hack it any more."
(Implying dislike for a job more than not being physically capable of it.)

I forgot that definition!

And I guess it also means getting into a computer system that you're not supposed to be getting into.

Maybe 'hack' is more versatile a word than I gave it credit for.

And it sounds stupid.

Not nearly as cool as "cool"...

And I don't know about other cities across the USA, but in my home town, NewYorkCity, cabbies were also known as hack drivers. What do you do for a livin’ Mac? Who me? I drive a hack.

…which sounded stupid to my Dad.
He used to say “cool man” just to irritate me.
