inside pics of my Grammer - cleated crack, bridge plate work?
Someone on Intragram posted something about Grammer guitars and the bracing (asking if it were ladder braced) so I thought I would take a quick pic of the inside. That led me to wonder about the bridge on my guitar, which is clearly lifting at the edges. It's been this way since I've had it (coming on 20 years now) and always assumed it was fine since it is screwed in (under the pearl dots).
The top crack was cleated prior to me getting it, seems like it's holding strong. The bridge plate looks to have had an extra layer added? Or possibly replaced altogether? Not sure what that's all about. Maybe the bridge pin holes had work the original surface too much? I welcome your thoughts/comments. Jay |

The cleat looks like original factory work, probably done to reinforce the center seam. It is a feature of some 1920's Martins.
The bridgeplate is 3 ply laminated, with what appears to be maple on the outside layers and lauan in the center. Laminated bridgeplates are common on 1960's Gibsons and 1970's Japanese guitars. Never a good idea, IMHO. The plate can be repaired in place, or replaced altogether. |

It almost looks as if the plate was not laminated that well and 'blew out' when they drilled the pin holes. Though the black and whitish markings on what appears to be a stain are curious too.
In any case that bridge plate is not doing so well. |

https://photos.app.goo.gl/56r5WrA4Dijj9McY6 Thank you for the comments. I'm planning on taking this guitar to a reputable luthier in the coming months for a full checkup and will be sure to mention the bridge plate. Included links to a couple more pics of the entire guitar. Thanks, Jay |
