Default Anyone tried the new Gibson G series yet?

These look really nice all-solid (spruce and walnut) guitars at excellent prices. The youtube clips are favorable. Anyone tried one yet?

If they're still studio versions, being thinner, I have zero interest. But it will be interesting to see how they take off. I wish they would rewind and continue with the J15 which seemed quite successful.

I love my J15 and decided against studio versions of the J45 for the same reason that the thinner bodies won't get me as close to the J45. I've heard great things about the IBG Epiphones that I'd think those might be a better choice for me versus the G series.

Hi Wellington, yes they are all thinner bodies except for the G-00 which is the same depth as the Standard 00. And yes the j-15 is/was a nice one!

Default G45

I got a G45 Studio back when they first came out July 2019. I thought it would be great to own a "genuine Gibson." It sounded good on the videos but I didn't like it. It had a couple of dead frets in important places. Changed the strings and used lemon oil- still dead spots. Maybe it was just the way I fingered it but I couldn't get the fretboard to work right. I traded it for my D-16- Still have the D-16 (I played it before I bought it). Be sure to play it before you buy it. I saw that they have the new 2021 versions of these out. Hopefully they have improved.

In our brave new world, that option continues to be ever more unlikely.

I like the idea of the thinner body. Also that they appear to deliver a more ringing treble response. That's not always the case with Gibson acoustics and why I've almost never been impressed with the J series.

Cool. I have a G-00 on the brown truck. When they did the original G series a few years ago, there was supposed to be a 00 and I always wanted it, but it never happened. When I saw this time 'round, I ordered one immediately.

What pickup are you gonna use? (you said you'll be gigging it tonight).

I like the sound of my G-45 studio alot more than most of the J-15's I've played. And not because I like thin trebley sounding guitars, mine honestly sounds more full. I havnt liked every G-45 I've played, but I've liked a higher percentage of them than I have the J-45 studios, a lower percentage than the J-45 standards though... All guitars are individuals.

Personal opinion though, they cut a hole in the side, got rid of the pickup, replaced the hardcase with a gig bag... and then raised the price a couple hundred bucks. I really dont know if I could bring myself to buy one of these new G models, unless I managed to cherry pick myself another cannon...

Haven't tried one yet but in every video I've watched they all sound extremely bright and thin with almost zero bass and warmth.

Also, I'm not sure how you would benefit from that port hole if you mostly play plugged in?

I agree. It's identical to the prior G45 except for the sound port and no electronics and a gig bag instead of the hardshell case. How is that a good deal? If anything it should be around $300 cheaper than the past G45.
