I have a question, what was the thickness of the wood before you sanded and after you sanded it clean.

I've been using TruOil for 20 years, and there are a few tricks. I'll post my sequence if you like.

I'm fairly certain it is/was a B-25N. I can remember what it looked like before it was butchered. I had to use 80 or 100 grit to remove whatever was put on it. I think you can be able to see from the pictures what needs grain filling and what would just some finer sanding. Again, the sound isn't that important to me. I'm not sure of the wood thickness before and after sanding. Rodger i would be interested in your tru oil sequence.

Thanks

You did a fine job stripping that down. That's a lot of work!

Looks like you just need a bit more finish sanding and you are done. By the looks of it you will need a pore filler if you want that look. I would recommend Aquacoat. You can even tint it a mahogany color so that it has that traditional look to it.

What are you using to tint aqua coat?

Are they anything like powdered aniline dyes as sold by Lee Valley?

Aquacoat suggests using a sealer on bare wood before applying. This is to prevent splotchiness. I have used Zinsser aerosol shellac for this. 1 light coat.

You probably want to sand to 220 or 320. Put on the sealer coat. Then the aquacoat.

Obviously, follow the directions from the container or the Aquacoat website. There is a good Obrien video on you tube. https://youtu.be/AT-h8bNrWY0

Last time I bought the Zinsser aerosol it was like $7.50 at Home Depot stateside. It is like $24 here in Canada. I an waitibg for the border to open.

I cannot say for sure as I have never used them. I can say though that with the SM stuff a very little bit goes a long way.

apply sealer
aquacoat maybe tint the neck and sides
sand again
do the tru oil thing?

right now i don't know what i should do different between the two types of wood in this guitar

In general, spruce top does not need grain filler (aquacoat), mahogany and most back & side woods do except maple.

There is a big learning curve to finishing an instrument. Have you thought of finding a local guitar builder whose work you like and paying them to finish the guitar? You've done the grunt work of sanding already.

no the only person i've found around here does more building than taking on other's unfinished work, but either way i'm not real worried about the overall outcome being perfect. i do want the sequence to be correct though. i'm going to get back to some sanding (what my body will allow) and updated pictures once i'm done.

Edit: i can't tell from the videos i've watched, but does aqua coat dry transparent? i feel like from what i've seen it might be noticeable in the wood grain after sanding. or maybe they just hadn't wiped it down yet.
