I'm with you guys too. I mostly use my HD650's, double checking on my monitors here and there. And then before I sent my album mastering I booked two hours in a pro studio in town just to double check. |

I once worked with a guy who formerly worked in a stereo store (Remember those?). He told me that among the sales staff the standard measure of equipment value was KPD, which stood for "Knobs Per Dollar."

Humm interesting, I worked in several in the early 70's but as far as audiophile mind set it was pretty much the opposite and more like DPP= dollars per pound. The prevailing theory and goal was definitely "straight wire with gain"....

You probably worked in high-end audio, and he probably worked in low-end audio! My question is, which audience was the most gullible?

That's only 1/10th the price of the new $750,000 Magico M9 speakers.

I realize it may be considered fashionable to bash or dismiss Audiophile as someone who has "more money than sense" and also to consider John Q as neophytes that can be sold a bill of goods, while both no doubt happen in consumer audio sales , both are the exception, not the rule. So the correct answer to your question is neither ..... Generally speaking it's a matter of learning the skill of critical listening . Which is most definitely a specific learned skill and definitely not inherent in either personal hearing (the exception being a hearing loss) or the amount of time or experience in simple listening . And even then personal preference will bring a huge variable

I get more accuracy out of my headphones (also HD650s) than I could ANY monitors because of my room. My room has a big spike around 150hz due to 8' ceilings. Until I get some good bass trapping up there, there is no point in better monitors. My goal is to get my room good to warrant an upgrade to decent monitors like maybe some HS8s. Probably never will be a candidate for high end monitors.

It was meant somewhat facetiously, but there always is that class of buyer that will buy a $100 AC power cord or a set of $1,000 speaker cables, truly believing that those things will make things sound better.

Beyond what I would pay to be sure, but I am not an electrical engineer so I don't presume to know or judge or really care if they might or might not offer some (even if minute) improvement,,, so as to assign being gullible to it . Just as I don't judge someone buying the cheapest entry level gear as bing a waste of money either. Which is also something I would not do .

Is $72k considered as being a limited budget for monitors ?

Ya just trying to be humorous. Here I thought I was being a bit exorbitant when I got the Amphion One 18's and their 100 wt. Amp .. But now mere pittance comes to mind
