Apples and oranges. The M-36 has a very special unique balance of low end depth like a dread with the comfort on an OM body thickness, light gauge strings for ease of playability. Super cool guitars that don't get enough credit from the unknowing. I didn't know ...and tried a couple recently. LOVE the M-36 model!

Really liked the D-28...perhaps my favorite Martin Dread.
I agree with previous post. M-36 is indeed unique. Very quick response and well balanced due to shallow body. My favorite Martin for sure.

Add me to that crowd. For me, the M-36 won out after two extensive 90 minute tryouts in my independent dealer's private room, against the reimagined D-35 and a 2009 D-45 (and also a Ted Thompson T-1, the latter passed on largely because it's voiced too similarly to other guitars I own). The Martin D is perfect for some playing styles, is enormously popular and widely owned - it just isn't what I was looking for, and money was not an object.

That said, I don't think the M-36 goes as far in articulation, note separation or complexity as other guitars I've played - but compared to those guitars it does have more headroom, pleasing sympathetic resonance, and more vintage voicing, and hence has a happy place in the collection.

Yeah, just to clarify, the changes are not just cosmetic. The bracing is now forward shifted and scalloped as pointed out above. I could be wrong but I believe almost all, if not all of the standard models received some type of bracing change/upgrade.

On a side note, a local dealer in my area who carries some impressively high end guitars, wrote that the newest M-36 is one of the more impressive Martin models. They pointed out that the guitar is built more lightly than before due to the new bracing and it translates to a very responsive instrument.

That's why the new 2018 model intrigues me. The new 1-3/4" nut width will be perfect.

Again, M-36 changes are mostly cosmetic and NO bracing changes. Neck shape and nut width will be the only major changes to M36 to 2018 model. Mall changes include logo, case, and binding colors. See link below.

This is just one website but I have read these changes quite a bit. As mentioned, I am pretty sure that all the standard models received bracing changes.

The M36 has had the forward shifted scalloped bracing since the model was reintroduced into production. This is one of my dream guitars, I memorized the specs long ago...
