I like Kinnano. I laughed when I saw it beside the neck. Which is funny because the last bunch of my guitars have been roughly size 5's.

We, Bill and i, have been in discussion about a decorative scheme for this little guy. Bill wants cocobolo binding and rope purfling featuring green purfling lines. So here im cutting little 45 degree pieces for a trial purfling layup.
The finished layup next to cedar to get an idea how its going to look.

Work on the little guitar now known as the John Boat, (a much smaller boat than a dreadnaught) is proceeding.
The back strip is cocobolo bordered by white/green/white. Green and white and cocobolo will be a recurring theme. A closeup The sound port is bound, the carbon fiber struts are in and the internal Chanel for the sliding neck support is cut. I put some epoxy finish on the interior. View from the other side

Looks GREAT
Looks Great To me. I am really pleased to see other folks asking for the CF struts to free up the top for making music! Always seemed like a great idea to me, and it sure has worked on our three customs with them!!!
Carry on and have fun!!! Paul

Oval soundhole
I’m seriously thinking about putting an oval soundhole on this guitar. Here is a rough sketch on the flat model i made for this little guy. It reminds me of some old arch tops or some of the older members of the mandolin family. I think this hole might be a little small. According to some research i have done on sound holes the edge of the opening is more influential than the total area of the hole. My understanding is that this is the reason the violin family evolved from a round sound hole that was common in the 10th century to a crescent hole to the elongated hole in modern violins. Lots of edge for a given soundhole area. I’m not completely sure i understand the mathematical description but this is the general conclusion reached by two guys who were doing a doctoral thesis on the subject of sound holes (imagine). So another reason for an oval soundhole. More edge per unit area. But mostly its because i thin it would look cool on this guitar.
I spent the morning working on an adaptation for my drimmel router base that will be both adjustable and will be able to cut an oval instead of a circle. The two pins ride in the x slots and as you turn the router low and behold it scribes an oval. The size of the X will determine the shape of the oval.

I think the oval soundhole looks great--I agree that it should be a little larger.
Such a cool little geetar!

I agree, I think it needs to be a little larger also.

Hard to imagine Bill.
I think we are going with John boat or maybe, skiff. I like skiff because it’s a shorter name. Quote:
Yep, good call Tom

I know Fred. I made a uke with a bolt on neck and had to enlist my daughter in law to do the neck bolts. Dont want to repeat that mistake
