Default Guitarist Guitar Change Disapointment

Have you ever followed an acoustic guitar player and was disappointed when they changed to playing a different guitar?

I was disappointed when Norman Blake stopped playing D-18s or dreads. His playing didn't seem to have that western edge to it after that. Not that it's the guitars fault. Mary Flowers switched to a Fraulini guitar. I'd love to have one and I thought hers sounded great. But in subsequent listens to her I am disappointed because the guitar has to much ringing or overtones for all her picking to come through. Her old L-00 worked better for my liking. I won't mention Clapton switching from Les Pauls as that's not an acoustic guitar.

I image there are a group of people saying thank heavens he finally switched. I was thrilled when JT switched to Olsen, but I imagine some people liked the Gibson better.

Do drums count? I never forgave Buddy Rich for switching from Slingerland to Ludwig when I was a kid.

Julian Lage went from a vintage Martin to a Collings. He remains amazing, but I don’t like the tone of the Collings as much.

MY favorite guitarist is Rik Emmett and he has played a lot of different guitars, including a signature Dean flying V. Interestingly, he mod-ed his V and made real changes to his signature model, not just cosmetic changes.

Anyway, he stopped playing real acoustics in concert and switched to MultiAC, which were always EQ'ed horribly and the sound was terrible.

John Denver was well known for his Guilds.
It was a bit of let down when he started using Yamaha and then Taylor guitars.

It also cost me a lot more money to get a Yamaha L Series and a Taylor. LOL

Another Rik Emmett fan here. I saw him live with Triumph several times, but unfortunately I've never caught him in his work since. Great guitar player and so versatile.

Jorma Kaukonen got his signature warm, but punchy acoustic tone from that late 50s Gibson J50. None of his subsequent Gibsons or Martins have come close.

I love to hear Keb Mo on a resonator guitar such as his Reso Rocket. He tends to play a Reso-lectric in concert these days which has almost no sustain. I'm sure its easy to plug n play but worth the extra effort in my opinion to get his signature sound.

I can’t say that a musician’s changing instruments has ever bothered me one bit...

Neil Young playing on 'Hank' - sublime.

Neil Young on this little thing - not so much.

Pierre Bensusan played a Ryan on most of the Altiplanos album. It's all personal taste of course but I enjoyed the sound the Ryan way more than the sound of his "Old Lady" Lowden. Best advertisement for Ryan I have ever heard!

And Eric Johnson on anything but his D35. No disrespect to the D35 (I'd love to own one myself!), but it just doesn't seem to suit him.

I was somewhat nonplussed when Davd Rawlings forsook that ol' Epi Olympic for a and enormous, ugly D'aquisto or whatever it was.

There is aguy n my area who has played an oldish Martin OM for ages and played it really well, singing old songs from the 20s-'40s.
Last Time I saw him he was playing a solid electric Taylor that was supposed to "sound like" an acoustic".

It sounded horrible.

Molly Tuttle's Pre-War sounds amazing. Also, Tommy Emmanuels do too...
