And parents, talk with, probe, pry, delve into, communicate with and do everything you can to know what's going on in your children's lives, what they're thinking, why they are thinking it and try to steer them back on course if they are veering off course. Know who they are associating with.

Understandable that people feel compelled to offer such condolences and are no doubt heartfelt . Understanding and abiding by the "no fly zone" I would only suggest , in the big picture and in an of itself itself , does strike a note of being a bit glib, in face of such regularly repeated, unrelenting, tragedy. I am so thankful that my kids are adults..

Tactically speaking, far far far to many variables to make a one off simplistic statement of after the fact prediction for solution , even remotely viable.

I’ve maintained for years that ever since Charles Whitman did his thing (in Texas...) years ago, that this ideation of “mass shootings” has gotten into the public consciousness here.
A “meme” if you will, in the meaning of that term as proposed by Richard Dawkins.

As a result, it resonates with a certain type of dissafected, alienated individual. This kid, to preliminary reports, emulated the Columbine lads, wearing a trench coat and building explosive devices.

I can’t think of a workable solution. This lad used weapons legally purchased by his father.

Improving security at facilities like large schools is both difficult and expensive, and to a degree unpopular. (“Our kids can’t learn in a prison-like environment”)
What with huge numbers of public schools fighting for the necessities of teaching now, the added burden of full-time security seems like a no-go.

Somehow make all teen-agers accepting and egalitarian and supportive of all their peers.... Seems unlikely. When has it ever been thus?
