Your Mac Studio supports five displays in total—four displays with resolutions up to 6K at 60 Hz connected to the Thunderbolt ports and one HDMI display up to 4K resolution connected to the HDMI port.

If you have a Mac Studio with the M1 Ultra chip, you can connect displays and other supported video devices to the front Thunderbolt 4 ports. You can connect up to five displays using only the front and back Thunderbolt 4 (USB-C) ports (without using the HDMI port).
Ah I did not realize that TB 4 and and USB -C were compatible for video display use (or read that and forgot about it ) .so if M8 can use the USB-C connection for computer display, that is good news. And so you could get two of those 32 "displays for a $100 less than one Apple Studio display

Yep, and to be honest, I don't think I have any use for higher resolution than 4K on my studio monitor. At 4K, a few non-resizable plugins are so small that they're a bit of an annoyance.

I use dual screens on my "Studio B" system where I do a lot of editing and VI work etc. The newer higher res on the left and an older 1920x1200 screen on the right. When tracking or using complex plugins I too keep the main DAW screen on the left and the plug ins or VI controls on the right, because I want the controls etc big enough to easily see and grab. I suppose I could use scaling to do the same with two higher res monitors, but the old monitor is paid for and does its job.

We just got our Mac Studio M1 Max setup at the studio. Waited a while for it to get to us, but it was worth the wait. It's insanely fast.

I'm also quite impressed at how stable Pro Tools is on the latest OS. My home mix room iMac Pro is still on Catalina, because it is just rock solid. I am considering updating that. I'll decide for sure once we've given the new system a couple of weeks of hard use.

Very excited for you DupleMeter!
I am 99% sure I am getting the Mac Studio M1 Max as well...

The only reason I am waiting a bit...is for some of the program companies to update their software in order to work with the mac studio Montery and Mi chip.

So Please keep us updated and let us know if you are able to get all of the programs to work with your new toy.

Interesting If I might ask what amount of RAM and size SSD did you opt for? And what display ?

I have been testing PT 2022.4 which I have installed on an external drive and on my iMac (listed below) so far so good.

I also have PT installed on Macbook Pro -M1 Pro chip but still have not purchased the double adaptors necessary to run my Carbon . The little I have played around with using the internal sound card has been fairly impressive though.

To answer:

So far everything I normally use is working fine: Waves, McDSP, LiquidSonics, PluginAlliance, IZotope, Synchro Arts, & Celemony are all working as expected (just faster). Even ShutterEncoder is exponentially faster when I need to convert something.

We went for 64GB RAM with a 1TB boot SSD. All sessions are stored & run from external drives. As are all samples & libraries.

That said, 64GB may have been overkill. The memory architecture on the M1 is so much more efficient. It’s almost like having 2X the physical RAM. I would suspect many would be more than fine with 32 or even 16.

Forgot to mention Metric Halo is also good. We have 3 ULN-8s for 24 in/out at the studio.

I am in one room situation and I forgot to ask are you noticing any fan noise (a big controversy over on GS) and became hard to distinguish any real world experience from all the speculation and the typical GS bickering and flame wars ...... It can be issue at times with my iMac listed in my sig line

One of the reasons I went iMac Pro for my home mix room was because of the advanced cooling. I know the struggle.

So far I haven't noticed the fan come on at all. Did an all day overdub session yesterday & it never came on...or if it did I didn't hear it.

Similarly, the 16" M1 Max MacBook Pro I use for location work & remote editing has been super quiet too. In the 6 months I've been using that I don't think I've ever heard the fan come on.

I didn’t remember you use the Metric Halo ULN-8. Since this is a Mac thread I’ll email my questions to you about using the ULN-8 as a dumb interface to a Windows computer.

All this talk about the new M1 architecture made me curious. I purchased a MacBook Pro 16 M1 Pro to have a go with. It’s an excellent machine. Unfortunately, I can’t run certain Windows apps I require in Parallels effectively. I figured that might be the case, but I wanted to give it a try.

I now have to decide if I can justify keeping it for home use and music recording alone. It’s a rather expensive machine.

For MacOS users I suspect now is somewhat of a “golden age” like with acoustic guitars.

Would this get you going for your needs on Apple Silicon ?
