ANOTHER "chair" thread... lol

OK, so I have always just used stools to play guitar on. But I have developed some lower back issues, and can't do the "hunched over on a stool" thing anymore. I need to sit up straight and/or have some lower back support to help me sit up straight.

At first I looked at the plethora of office chairs available, lots with lumbar support, but they are all ugly. My music room is very nice, all wood, rustic, and I really don't want an ugly plastic office chair in there. (altho in the future, my back may overrule me).

I started using one of our wood folding chairs, because it was the right height and allowed me to sit up straight... and it actually works quite well! So I started searching for nice wooden chairs... the catch is, because my guitar room is also a family room, it would be nice to have something I could put away when not in use... do they make nice, wooden, padded, FOLDING chairs? THEY DO!

I haven't bought one yet, but was checking in here to see if anyone has had any experience with them... I didn't even know they existed until today. Elegant enough, padded, wood.... not cheap, but a lot less expensive than other chairs... especially "guitar chairs" I have seen...

I got a nice outdoor folding chair for playing on my patio for the same reason and it also works great!

I play on a kitchen-chair, similar to the one in the photo, but it doesn’t fold. The straight back, and comfortable seat-height, make it perfect for achieving a perfect, comfortable playing-position - sitting upright, back supported, thighs horizontal, lower legs vertical.

How people can play properly and comfortably in a rocking-chair, or a chair with arms, or semi-reclined on the sofa, is completely beyond my comprehension!

The usual disclaimers apply......IMHO, YMMV etc.

On a hard floor those buttons on the bottom of the legs would be floor scratchers if there's any grit on the floor at all.

...and costs hundreds of dollars (new) lol. This 2-pack was $138, and they can be used as extra dining room chairs when needed.

The Original Guitar Chair does look comfy, but I could never get over the price. Heck- the Pick-n-Glider, which is FAR more labor to build than the OGC is only $350!!



...and is the chair I would buy, if the wife would allow me to have a large chair permanently in the family room with my guitar stuff... I always wanted a pick-n-glider. We actually have 2 of them, with arms, in this room now... in front of the fireplace.

Make your own for a fraction of the cost! Just hit the local thrift shop and pick up a glider rocker. Take off the arms. Add gussets between the seat and back risers to help stabilize the back. Sit. Play.

Thanks for posting that, ruger9. I have a friend who uses something very similar and loves it. She likes that she can easily put it in her car and take it to workshops as well.

Simply look for a used one as I did. Problem solved. These specialized chairs don't seem to hold their value, unless I was just lucky.

There are so many choices for chairs, and so many different body dimensions that it would be difficult to know what works for anybody other than myself. I can only offer my own experience without any particular claims about what anybody else has posted here. I guess we all feel differently on that matter.

I just use a normal folder but with a padded seat, probably $20 at Walmart
I also play on my armed computer chair i have to sit forward because of the arms, not much help with your back tho.

I think most any of the chairs mentioned in this thread would work for me. Since, at the time I bought this particular chair, I was focused on classical guitar and one showed up inexpensively in the local Craig's List, I would get it. It does provide decidedly different support for those playing in the classical position.

It was designed for the serious classical player who might spend hours sitting on that chair and practicing. For that person, the cost of the chair is probably just the price to pay for a chair designed for that purpose, and is certainly less expensive than trips to a chiropractor. The chair does fold flat and is therefore useful for carrying along to a recital or concert.

For just putting the guitar on your left leg with the neck parallel to the floor, I doubt this particular chair would be of much help. However, since we are discussing guitar chairs, I thought a mention of this one should be fine. Since this isn't a classical guitar forum, though there is that sub-forum too, I suppose my recommendation would fall on deaf ears and folks who don't know the why and how of such a chair would squawk about the price. I probably should have just kept my mouth shut and we would all be the better for it. I will remember that next time, since my interests all too often don't quite line up with these forums as I have to continually remind myself unfortunately after having posted something.

Agreed that chairs with arms do get a bit in the way for playing guitar, but everybody has their favorite and/or most convenient chair, and whatever works is fine since there really aren't any "rules" about such things because these things are so individual. I also have a guitar stool with matching guitar stand. The stool provides no back support, but is fine for just causal playing as I mentioned in the previous paragraph where the Guitar Chair wouldn't be of much help.

These are very similar (and quite a bit cheaper). We bought 4 of these to supplement our dining set for family dinners and they're quite comfortable...

Hey those are nice! I think I like the fabric padding better on the one I posted, but that's a great price!
