Well, aluminum has been around a lot longer than carbon fiber so there's probably a bigger fan base . . . . !

I've played a 'Martin Alternative' aluminium body acoustic guitar.

Sounds great amplified.

Played acoustically it's very quiet.

I owned one of those aluminum-topped Martin resonators (ALT II RES) for several years. When I first got into slide playing, there were not many resonator choices that had fourteen frets to the body and a cutaway, so I gave it a shot. I like those upper frets and going past #12 was important in open tunings.

It was an OK guitar tone-wise (acoustically and through the pickup) but they had a lot to learn about building a resonator guitar. The neck was put on at a poor angle, and needed to be reset almost immediately. The cone was replaced / upgraded during that process at my expense. Both actions helped and I played slide on that guitar for a while. I did not exactly cry crocodile tears when it sold, but the new owner liked it, just as I did when it first came to me. A lid for every pot I guess.....

I only played the aluminum topper acoustic version once or twice, and it was unimpressive. Only the top was aluminum - the body was HPL and the neck was Stratabond.

I've owned a lot of aluminum beer cans. Sort of quiet, never tried plugging one in.
