Default Can't record in Studio one

Who knows, this community might solve my problem before any other solution method comes through.

After MONTHS of waiting for the opportunity to set up in our new studio and record with my absorption panels, I have a couple of days set aside. What a treat. I'm all set up ... and can't record.

sE8 stereo mics --> Motu M6 --> 2023 MacBook Pro M2 --> Studio One 5 Pro.

– Mics are plugged into mic inputs 1 and 2 on the M6
– Track is armed
– Studio One Preferences set up for Motu M6 input and output
– Set up to go through L1 and L2 in the M6, just like I always have done (not Motu's Loopback option)

No sound is getting picked up through this signal chain. I'm in a new room so I don't have my near-field monitors; I'm listening through closed-back headphones, and I can hear everything else coming through the computer, so the audio chain is fine. I can hear playback from existing tracks in the song.

But when I arm the track to record, no sound is getting in.

Just passed Motu's customer service hours.

Arghhh

Do you have phantom power engaged on the mics, the button on the front of the MOTU that says 48v?

OMG. From where I was sitting the gain knob was in my line of sight to the 48V button.

Is there a trap door around here? (Pretty embarrassed)

Many thanks!

We've all done it. The other thing you're going to do at some point is forget you disabled a plugin and your brain will convince your ears it's hearing a change when you adjust the plugin. You'll do that one more than once.

This is related to the intentional gambit used when doing live sound. When some yahoo wanders by and yells "Needs more bass!" (or guitar, or cowbell, or whatever), you find a knob that isn't doing anything and twiddle it a bit. Give an expectant look at said yahoo, who will probably give you a thumbs up and "That's better!"

Not as much fun when the sound guy and the yahoo are both you.

It’s not the car; it’s the idiot behind the wheel.

Happy to report I made a good beginning today. I have two more free days ahead to keep at it.

Or you play through a cranked Marshall stack and you can overcome the lack of phantom voltage

Seriously alway nice to set up in new studio space,,, have fun
