He owned the stage - only performer who could open for Steve Martin w/o being eaten alive. Truly legendary.

I feel fortunate to have gotten to see him once. A bunch of us caravanned from Peoria to Evanston to see him open for the Rice-era Grisman Quintet at Northwestern. He was fantastic, and it only improved when he brought Jethro Burns out to join him.

Since it's a guitar forum, what's he playin'? It's not a Martin, or a Gibson, is it?

I just watched the 2005 Jimmy Buffett concert at Wrigley Field. He mentioned Steve several times noting how much Steve helped him in the early days and stopped the show to recognize Steve's family in the audience that day.

I see and hear a lot of Steve in how Tommy E plays, and sounds.

Boy...would that have been a fiery duet!

Best Regards

One of the GREATEST songs ever written.

"City of New Orleans",

Though I do prefer Arlo Guthrie's version,

What about John Denver's version, where he changed a couple of words and took a co-writing credit?

I'll have to look for one tonight when I get home. I may not be able to find one. It appeared on his "Aerie" album, and he made one or two minor changes, including changing "old black men" to "old gray men."

In all fairness I have no idea if he consulted Goodman on the changes or not. It's entirely possible he did, and received his blessings. But I know his name doesn't appear as a co-writer on Goodman's recording (or Guthrie's for that matter), while it does on the Denver album.

I too was fortunate to see Steve in concert back when I was in college. He put on a fabulous show that lasted nearly three hours. An incredible showman, guitarist, songwriter, and all-around human being.

I was fortunate to see him with John Prine in Denver @1980. They played a venue that only held around 200 people which really made it a special show. ..Will never forget it.
