Thomastik-Infeld John Pearse Folk vs traditional Saverz nylon
Here's a pseudo comparison. I can't remember if I recorded the 1st clip with my Zoom H5, but I probably did. The 2nd clip is with the Zoom H5, right in front of the sound hole. My Cordoba C5 is what it is. There's that inherent plunky sound to the trebles. I'm curious if there is less of it with normal tension. Any thoughts?
Both clips are CGDGCD, capo 3. The first clip is cleaned up with reverb and a tweak to stereo field. The second is just clipped at the front and end for misc. movement noises. The gain on the second clip is higher so watch your sound levels headphone wearers Savarez Cristal Corum in High Tension 500CJ The Thomastik-Infeld strings are right next to the steel string sound to my ears. The trebles are nylon wound around a steel core. Its a sort of zingy sound. Nothing wrong with either based on what your ears like best on any given day. For my first listen, I liked the first recording better.

Very interesting comparison, Barry. Thanks for going through the trouble of doing that for us, I'm sure it will be helpful for anyone considering the John Pearse strings.
I definitely prefer the natural sound of the Savarez strings. To my ear, the John Pearse strings sound very strange, not quite steel but not quite nylon either....almost makes it sound like an instrument other than a guitar (it vaguely reminds me of the zing you get from an autoharp). It's not unpleasant, just an unexpected timbre.

The #1 steel is too far removed from the classical character for my ear. Both the Thomastik-Infeld Classic N Superlona CF128 nylon #1 and the KR116 nylon wound steel rope core #1 impress me as being more in tune with the classical character.

Can't answer other question in context of "plunkiness" of high versus normal tension, but I've been trying to record some things (first time in 10 years) and got better sound in general-especially less extraneous finger noise in general, after trying normal tension instead of high. I lost some acoustic volume (so what), but I didnt have to play as "hard," and recording results are prettier. (Now to figure out how to use Cubase LE for basic editing for mp3. Im stuck there.)

Thanks for posting this. I’ve been working through a variety of string options and the Thomastik-Infield JP Folk are in line for a try.
Both clips sound great to me but there is an obvious difference. Lovely piece of playing. Is this an original? Where might I find the tablature? Thanks, Tom R |

I really like the TI's in that recording - clear and beautifully played Barry.
I believe John Pearse's original concept with these strings was to give a more steel string guitar sound on a nylon string guitar. TI dropped the idea for some time but when they eventually decided to go into production they named them after John Pearse as a tribute.

I didnt know about a nylon-wrapped string being .016", so checked the Tomastik-Infeld website, and they say "nylon wrap, rope core" for the trebles for that set. So what material is the rope?

I've decided that I don't like the TI strings.
I ordered a few sets of mid tension ball end strings from Ernie Ball. I'm not going to throw the TI strings out, I'll save them along with the Savarez strings that my C5 shipped with. With 8 steel strings sitting here I don't need a classical that sounds like a steel string, I'm going to go through an extended experimentation period to find strings that I like.

Wow....I'll steer clear of those Thomastik Strings...very steel sounding indeed.
I'm gonna give the Hannabach 1869 Carbon/Gold MHT a try on my Cordoba. Thanks for the comparison, very... 'ear-opening'!
