Default Rainsong Vintage D Model Question

All,

I have read a few threads on this topic and I wanted to ask those of you who have played these models about bass response. I am strongly considering the new Rainsong Vintage dreadnought. I love their neck shape and the idea of the of carbon fiber. Until now, I just didn't care for the looks and some of the more strident sounds I experienced with Rainsongs. Problem solved?

I do folk/Americana mostly. But, I also play bluegrass. I'm wondering if anyone has (in addition to Jon) had the opportunity to compare the new dreadnought to a Martin. If so, is the bass response comparable? I need the thump for the bluegrass rhythm. This will likely be the deciding factor for me.

Thanks!

David

I really like my Rainsong Vintage dread, but it does not have the low end of my D18...

Bummer. But, thank you nonetheless.

Indeed, but you’re the one guy in the forum who has both on hand for comparison. So, an educated opinion is very valuable. :-)

Mine seems to be evenly matched with my duo partner's HD-28V for low end and maybe a bit louder. You need to try it to see how it meets your expectations. I put a high value on ease of ownership after having several wooden guitars give me hassles which might impact my ear.

Thanks for sharing, David. I hadn't seen that, but as the owner of a Rainsong Vintage (the first in the world, I believe), I actually thought that the RS tone sounded best in the finger style diddies, not heavy strumming. This goes along with my frequent refrains that dreads are not just strummers - they can also be great finger style guitars...

That was my thought also - but as a non-strummer, who hasn't owned anything remotely resembling a dread for over 30 years, I don't really have a baseline to work from.

Some info on the strings and pick used would be helpful, but it's still just a YouTube video, so more guidance than reality.

Sounds terrible. Probably still has those horrible 80/20 strings Rainsong ships with.

Strings make such a difference on these guitars.

Agreed. Let's put the brightest, most horrible sounding strings we can find on our super, hypersensitive, responsive guitars.

Hi David, If you do get a chance to play a V-DR I would be curious to your thoughts on how it sounded. Jon

It is my goal, on this (my birthday) weekend, to visit the shop and give it a thorough beating. But, seeing as how my family doesn’t always see things my way, it might be a wee bit longer. Lol

I am too much of a RainSong fanboy to give it a fair evaluation and my duo partner has been listening to my RainSongs for so long he probably is starting to think his Martins sound strange :~).

I can't say much of anything about the Vintage D, but my Nashville JM has a rather pleasant abundance of warm bass!
