I'd go with the adjustable booms - they are still cheap, and you'll find yourself wanting better ones from time to time, but I've been using them for a while, and they do the job fine. I generally trip over all the wires than the mic stand legs -

I got the cheap stands you referenced in your first link.

I, too, just use them for home recording. They do the job well with no problems for me.

I also have the same mic set, the MXL 990/991. I've used the LD mic (990) in an upright position, slung low, for my guitar and upside-down, over my head, for vocals. The stands have performed just fine with no balance problems.

I'd like to get some nicer stands some day, but for the moment, the cheap ones are working just fine.

Thanks for the great advice Rhancox. I went ahead and ordered them on Sunday and they just arrived today at my office. Once I get home, I'm going to get them up and running and I'll let everyone know my final verdict.

For clarification, I went with the 2 pack of the cheapest ones. I also get a mini stand to mic up my electric amp.

After playing around with the stands last night, I give them both (the small amp mic stand and the regular size) two thumbs up. For $10/mic stand, this is a steal! The weight so far has been fine even with the boom pretty far out and the stands get pretty tight, so nothing slips.

Going to practice some with everything this weekend and hopefully get a rough cut of something done.

Unhappy

I've been using the same mic stands for 30 years, both at gigs and in home recording. I like the weighted base units. All the the ones I have bought thinking that the tri-legs were an upgrade quickly broke. Most breaks at the sliding unit that goes up and down to make the units packable.

Default Ultimate MC-125

Aloha,

I have two of these in my studio. Haven't tipped over yet & you can easily move 'em where you need them.

The adjustable weight is a cool feature.

I'll put this on my 'dream' list.

I have the stand in your second link and use it for home recording, although not much of that. I don't think I would want to use it as a heavy use stand if I was out gigging, but for around the house it's great.
