Consider A clip on Mic
You may consider a clip on mic. I know Noam Pikelny along with the fellows from the Punch Brothers (Chris Thile's band) all use Audia Technica clip ons and they have a remarkable live sound. Obviously if your going to play in a really loud setting a pick-up would be a better option.

If your banjo needs a pickup there is something wrong...
The guy with a banjo in our group drowns out even the largest dreadnought... jackL |

I thought it would be handy for Multi track recording and for live looping.

I understand wanting a pickup in a banjo. I have the Schatten pickup with the volume control in my banjo, and I've been pleased with it. It was very easy to install and it sounds really good. I use a Line 6 wireless system and a Morley volume pedal with my banjo. The pickup sounds good and it a lot handier than messing about with a mic.

I've had very good results with a Schertler Dyn-G before.
