Saddle
I have a Crafter DV 250CEQ/VTG . I bought it used. It has a under saddle pickup. The saddle sits in the bridge very loose. If I flip the guitar over it would fall out. Is this supposed to be like that? If I replace the saddle any suggestions on what to use Tusq bone? Thank you, stay safe and healthy.

The saddle should be a firm fit. I have some that I can pull out by finger but only just, some others I need to use something with a little more grip ... but none of them would fall out if I flipped the guitar.
I'm thinking either a proper fitting bone or Tusq saddle is going to be an improvement acoustically - sorry but not sure which is best for the under saddle pick up.

I have replaced two saddles and I'm very pleased with them. But bone would also be a good choice. Jerry Rosa of Rosa String Works makes nuts and saddles out of dear antler. A lot of people swear by them but I have not tried. A firm press fit saddle is the way to go. Just enough to press it in but not so tight that you have to use vice grips to get it out. Ron |

I have had a lot of great success with the macnichols bone saddles from amazon.
Personally I haven't liked tusq saddles and how they wear. They seem to get grooves from the strings a lot easier |

Perfect saddle fit is...
...where it will just stay in when the guitar is turned over. There shouldn’t be any wobble when in the slot, but you also shouldn’t have to apply pressure to seat it in the slot.
For under saddle pickups it’s quite critical that the bottom of the saddle and the saddle slot are both flat and square to achieve good contact along the length. Last edited by nikpearson; 12-09-2020 at 01:31 AM. |

Many luthiers and techs will make a saddle lose for under saddle pickups to work better. If it's too tight then it might not press down fully on the saddle. Falling out might be a bit loose though. But if its not leaning forward when under string tension and you are getting a good electric tone then I'd say just leave it.

I'd recommend getting in touch with Bob Colosi at the below link. He does a great job with custom saddles, bridge pins, etc.

A saddle that is too tight will cut off any sound from an under saddle pickup. Run into this multiple times with martins.
